Older Adults Want Answers After Unitedhealthcare Drops Silversneakers Company Expands Its Fitness Program
NORTH CAROLINA – When Dennis Maneri learned in December that SilverSneakers built into his health insurance was no longer included, he felt cheated.
It felt like a bait and switch, said Maneri, who uses physical exercise to avoid having to take medications for diabetes.
As of Jan. 1, UnitedHealthcare no longer offers SilverSneakers for the more than 2 million customers using Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplemental insurance in certain states, including North Carolina. But instead, the company said it is offering its own fitness program that is more flexible and innovative.
I had dropped coverage with Blue Cross Blue Shield from the year before and moved over particularly to AARP and UnitedHealthcare because I wanted SilverSneakers, said Maneri. Im a type 2 diabetic, so exercise is really important for me to maintain good health and A1C levels, so I was disappointed to say the least.
On Wednesday, Maneri handed over his credit card to staff at Brunswick Community Colleges Fitness & Aquatics Center. Now, he has chosen to pay $15 per month for his gym membership.
Its going to hit me in the pocket at a time of my life where Im not making more money, said Maneri. In fact, I canceled a couple other subscriptions today online to other services I get because I have to make some adjustments now.
After this story was first published, a UnitedHealthcare spokesperson shared details about the new fitness program available to its customers.

Its in everyones best interests for insurance plans to offer fitness benefits. According to the National Institutes of Health, exercise protects against heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and can even help prevent some forms of cancer. It also improves mental health and contributes to a better quality of life. For these reasons, its not surprising that a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study showed almost one-half of all U.S. workplaces include fitness benefits in their health plans.
SilverSneakers is a subsidiary of Tivity Health, the company behind Nutrisystem, Prime Fitness, and Wisely Well brands. Although its the largest company offering Medicare fitness programs, it competes against programs such as Active & Fit Direct and Silver & Fit.
Insurers that want to offer fitness benefits choose the program that makes the most sense for their members. Some insurance companies develop their own fitness networks. For instance, UnitedHealthcare recently scaled back its participation in SilverSneakers in favor of Renew Active, a new fitness program created exclusively for UHC Medicare Advantage members.
If your Medicare plan doesnt offer SilverSneakers, it may offer one of the other fitness programs. You may even get fitness benefits with your life insurance policy: For example, John Hancocks Vitality Program rewards policyholders who participate in an active lifestyle.
What Is The Aarp Medicare Silver Sneakers Program

What Is Aarp Renew Active
Members of AARP Medicare Advantage plans arent entirely out of luck when it comes to fitness program benefits. UnitedHealthcare replaced SilverSneakers with a different fitness program called Renew Active.
Renew Active works similar to SilverSneakers. The program offers a list of participating gyms and fitness centers, which you can find using the Find a Fitness Location search tool on the companys website. Some AARP Medicare Advantage plan members may also have the option of participating from home using a Fitbit and online workout videos.
Participating Renew Active locations include nationwide gym chains, local fitness centers and even community organizations like senior centers. Some of the participating facilities include:
- Orangetheory A heart rate-based total body group workout combining science, coaching and technology
- Pure Barre Workouts inspired by elements of ballet, yoga and Pilates that focus on low-impact, high-intensity movements incporporating strength training, stretching and cardio
- Club Pilates Low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility and posture
The gym and fitness center amenities available to Renew Active members will vary by location but may include pools, saunas and more, and they are generally equivalent to a basic membership at the participating facility.
There are even classes to join and events to attend that cover things like nutrition, caregiving, technology and more.

Which Parts Of Medicare Cover Silversneakers
Original Medicare does not cover gym memberships or fitness programs. Since SilverSneakers falls under this category, original Medicare doesnt cover it.
However, gym memberships and fitness programs, including SilverSneakers, are often covered as an additional benefit in Medicare Part C plans.
Private insurance companies approved by Medicare offer these plans.

United Healthcares New Program Renew Active
Despite the partnership between SilverSneakers and United Healthcare ending, United Healthcare is promoting fitness for seniors with a new program.
Renew Active is a new program that is covered by United Healthcare to promote the same fitness goals seniors have been achieving through SilverSneakers.
Along with typical workout routines, Renew Active provides brain fitness activities. This program, known as AARP Staying Sharp, comes at no additional cost to subscribers who already receive Renew Active as a benefit. Staying Sharp allows users to take a quiz that builds a personalized routine. Articles on mental fitness and workouts are all provided virtually.
Renew Active provides many of the same benefits as SilverSneakers. Gyms are available to members at no additional cost with instruction-based classes and open gym equipment. Renew Active also offers a FitBit sponsored community in which members can track their progress with other members, supporting the social aspect of this program.
Regardless of your fitness level, you can find programs that fit your needs. Here are some examples of programs available:
- Strength programs including dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, calisthenics

Positive reviews of UnitedHealthcare seem to come from a variety of sources. SilverSneakers provides a variety of programs for seniors looking for a healthier lifestyle. Not only is the programming top notch, it is freely available to anyone who qualifies! SilverSneakers, by far, has more locations available to seniors, with 17,000 gyms available. Silver and Fit has about 11,000 locations nationwide. Despite the lack of locations on the part of Silver and Fit, they provide 17 different home fitness kits that allow seniors to work out on their own time from the comfort of their home. This is great for people who do not want the instructor style of workout, which is what SilverSneakers excels at. Along with instructor-based fitness in a SilverSneakers gym, they offer instruction outside of the facility in classes such as yoga and Tai Chi.

How Do You Get A Membership
SilverSneakers list of participating health plans changes over time. For example, the parent company, Tivity Health, Inc., dropped some plans around 2016 while it redefined its mission and restructured. In 2020, eight new health plans will offer SilverSneakers.
If you have a preferred gym or fitness studio, ask if they partner with SilverSneakers. You can also check with your plan provider or the SilverSneakers website.
Look for access within your Medicare Advantage plan. The best time to do so is when you enroll in a new plan or review an existing one during the annual open enrollment period between October 15 and December 7. You can also make SilverSneakers one of the criteria for selecting your Medicare Supplement plan.

No Silver Sneakers In Some States
I’m curious why United Health Care / AARP Medigap would offer Silver Sneakers in some states but not in others? Apparently the deal is available in California, Oregon and Nevada, but not my home state of Washington.
I had Silver Sneakers through United Health Care and lost it in January, 2019. I am also a 68 year old fitness trainer and TEACH SS FLEX at several locations. A number of individuals lost SS under the UHC.
I dropped UHC as my supplemental plan and sbscribed with Medical Mutual in Ohio. I received a BETTER plan at a LOWER premium and it INCLUDED SS! I recommend all UHC subscribers to check with a broker to review options.
Of course you want to be sure that your are receiving the same coverage at a price that is affordable for your budget. But I can assure you that there are plans available that offer SS that AND coverage equal to or greater than UHC’s. My humble opinion, UHC is more concerned about their bottom line then our health.
And AARP should be lobbying Medicare for the provision of a Silver Sneakers type plan that is UNIVERSALLY available to all Medicare recipients.
It’s much better for our health and much less expensive to employ preventitive measures for our health and well being than to wait until people are sick.
And let AARP know that we do not need to support their organization financially if they are truly not putting US before their own bottom line.
