Men are shelling out increasingly big bucks for their shoes and Saks Fifth Avenue is gearing up to chase them.
The luxury retailer on Monday revealed plans to open an 8,000-square-foot shoe department at its Fifth Avenue flagship on Wednesday hawking everything from $65 Pumas to an $11,000 pair of Pierre Corthay alligator loafers.
The new, sixth-floor emporium will be 60% larger than its predecessor and will boast at least 2,000 different pairs from more than 60 luxury brands, said Saks president Marc Metrick.
The bold bet comes as mens footwear has become the fastest-growing business at Saks, fueled in particular by surging demand for blingy sneakers, Metrick said.
Fashion is incredibly important to men, Metrick told The Post. And footwear is their gateway drug.
Sales of mens shoes at Saks have grown by more than 50% over the past three years. The spike has been driven by fashion sneakers like the $695 Superbowl suede skate sneakers from Fear of God, the $650 Givenchy Urban Street NYC Low Tops and the $895 Balenciaga Triple S trainers.
Owned by Canada-based Hudsons Bay, Saks is trying to replicate the success of its massive womens shoe department, a 30,000-square-foot mecca that opened a dozen years ago and which took its own ZIP code, 10022-SHOE.
The womens footwear department became the headquarters of womens shoes, Metrick said. But mens apparel was an afterthought for a long time in department stores.
Saks Fifth Avenue Launches Curated Collection Of Mens Designer Sneakers

Saks Fifth Avenue has launched a curated collection of designer sneakers, called SNEAKS.
The SNEAKS installation will include high tops, slip-ons, athletic sneakers, collaborations and limited-edition, exclusive packages from Maison Martin Margiela, Giuseppe Zanotti, Dsqaured2, and more.
To kick off the launch, Saks Fifth Avenue will host a series of high-profile events in partnership with local athletes.
In Houston on February 26, Saks and former Houston Rocket Dikembe Mutombo will host a charity cocktail to benefit the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation.
On March 19 in Beverly Hills, Saks will host an exclusive event with Angeleno Magazine to benefit the Sports Spectacular foundation.
The event, presented by DJ Skee and music producer Harvey Mason, will feature appearances by Seattle Seahawk Ricardo Lockette, former NBA All-Star Byron Davis, Hudson Jeans owner Peter Kim and graffiti artist Alec Monopoly, who will be donating a piece of sneaker art.
The event will be followed by a ten-day in-store SNEAKS trunk show. In Boston on March 25, Saks will host a designer cocktail event with the Boston Bruins Foundation and Bruins players.
SNEAKS will include sneakers available exclusively at Saks from Maison Martin Margiela, Hugo Boss, Fendi, Dsquared2, Pierre Hardy, Jimmy Choo, Giuseppe Zanotti and Bally. Other sought-after brands available at Saks will include Versace, Valentino and Lanvin.
