When adidas designer Nic Galway was tasked with creating a retro-inspired shoe, he told his team to go to the archives, study the shoes, and then leave them in the archives. For the new SS17 NMD collection, adidas Originals has gone back to the drawing board to deconstruct and evolve the initial design into something new, yet retaining the same aesthetic. The city of Tokyo once again serves as a major inspiration for a new silhouette aimed at Urban Nomads: The adidas Originals NMD R2 silhouette dropped April 6th in two new colorways namely Core Black/Solid Grey and Night Cargo/White that are exclusive to Foot Locker Europe and available here.
The NMD silhouette broke a lot of new ground for adidas when it was released in 2015. Japanese architecture particularly the dramatic clash of high-tech and traditional elements in the city of Tokyo has been a major influence right from the start. Futuristic Tokyo buildings with their origami-like blend of glass, concrete, and steel are reflected in the NMD collections balanced use of high-tech tooling and bold color accents.
Continuing the Japanese urban influence, the NMD R2 evolves existing design features of the original in a playful, deconstructive manner. History Of The Adidas Nmd: R2
Since the invention of the Primeknit and Boost, people just cant get enough of them. As proof of its popularity, many Adidas creations, whether new or old, have adopted these technologies, the NMD included. The NMD, short for Nomad, made an appearance in December 2015, the same year when other tech-filled creations were launched. These included the Adidas Tubular and the Adidas Yeezys. This minimalistic approach to designing shoes led to the creation of the NMD_R1, the first model developed under the NMD line. This low-top sneaker combined the Primeknit upper and the Boost sole. Fans addicted to these innovations greeted its entrance with much enthusiasm. In fact, this shoe instantly sold out without the need for real celebrity endorsements.
The production of the NMD R2 followed a year after. A few minor updates were made to enhance the shoes fit and feel. This includes the removal of the NMD plugs found on the lateral side of this shoe and the addition of a big midsole block on its medial side.

Adidas Originals continues to push the latest generation of NMD running shoes with the unveiling of the latest colorway of the NMD_R2 sneaker. Continuing the tradition of the Three Stripes’ Primeknit material mixed with a Boost midsole, this new iteration of the NMD_R2 is one of the better colorways released by adidas.
The newest adidas NMD_R2 features a premium Primeknit construction with an engineered tonal stripe woven into the upper, complemented by tonal details including welded 3-stripes, laces and a molded heel patch. Placed atop a classic white Boost midsole, the design is then accented by the woven heel-tab, rubber outsole and asymmetric EVA heel insert on the shoes side panel, which are rendered in a bold core red palette. Dressed entirely in a white upper with flashes of gym red on the midsole and outsole, the release culminates as a presentation of the NMD_R2 in its most striking colorway yet.
News of the latest NMD_R2 iteration comes on the heels of adidas’ Ronin Pack set that was unveiled by the Three Stripes just a few weeks ago.
