How We Chose The Best Mens Running Shoes

The BEST Running Shoes 2022 | ft. Nike, New Balance, adidas, ASICS, Brooks and more

We used data from our fit id® outfitting process, interviews with designers and real-life wear testing to determine the best mens running shoes for most runs and the most runners.

You can shop with confidence at Fleet Feet: We offer free shipping on all orders over $99, and you have 60 days to return any gear if you dont like the way it looks, fits or feels. Plus, with our price-match guarantee, you can make sure you never pay too much for a new pair of running shoes.

Low Drop Or Zero Drop Running Shoes

A running shoe drop, or heel-to-toe offset, is the difference, measured in millimiters between the height of the shoe sole in the heel area vs the height of the sole in the toe area. For reference, traditional running shoes usually have an offset of 12mm. Low drop are considered shoes with a drop between zero and 4mm. Everything in between is also possible.

The logic is: shoes with a higher heel will favor heel strike during running, while shoes with a zero or low drop will favor a more forefoot or midfoot running gait. It is largely a matter of preference, but running on your toes requires a completely different set of muscle activation and switching from one kind of shoe to the other without proper conditioning and a very gradual approach might result in injury.

Best Running Shoes By Foot Shape

If you’ve had a 3D scan during our fit id® outfitting process, you know whether you have high or low arches, you know your heel shape and you can see your foot width. Or maybe you’ve tried enough running shoes to know you need a wide width.

Millions of runners and walkers have had their feet scanned at a Fleet Feet store, giving us tons of data to identify which shoes will fit which types of feet. Whatever your foot shape, we can match it with a pair that will help you run comfortably.

What To Look For In Kids Running Shoes

When making an investment like this, its vital to know what boxes you need to tick.

Theres one aspect of a kids running shoe that should take top priority the fit.

Because of the fact that childrens feet are always growing, its doubly important that their footwear fits properly.

Cramming a growing foot into shoes that are too small can lead to the foot taking on the shoes shape, which can cause long-term foot health problems.

Other important things to look for include a cushioned midsole and a flexible forefoot. This will allow for greater comfort and easy movement.

Youll also want some extra support in the shoes upper, especially if the kid in question is pretty hard on their shoes. Having added support increases durability and improves the chances of the sneakers lasting for a while.

Best Cushioned Racing Shoes

Best Long Distance Running Shoes Reviewed

On’s Cloudstratus shoe is the ultimate cushioned racing shoe that excels on outdoor road runs, weighs less than 11 ounces, and is perfect for the half marathon to marathon runner.

Pros: Tons of vertical and horizontal cushioning, great for longer runs, be it training or racing, works well on treadmills but is built for outdoor running

Cons: This much cushioning may not be ideal for some runners

The debate around cushioned running shoes can be a polarizing one . Despite those studies, highly cushioned shoes are still incredibly popular as brands like Hoka and On have offered their own unique take on the design for years.

Although it admittedly took me several years to join Team Cushioned Shoe, I’ve quickly become a convert in recent years and my favorite pair to both race and race train in is the Cloudstratus from On. Designed specifically for outdoor road running, the Cloudstratus leans heavily into the brand’s unique cushioning system, offering both horizontal and vertical cushioning.

This helps with the shoe’s energy return and just overall durability . That energy return is apparent, too, as I noticed from even the first run in these how much they contribute to driving me forward on each step.

On outfit the Cloudstratus outsole with a solid rubber grip that did its job because I never felt any sort of slippage, even on wet pavement. I didn’t try them on anything super slick like ice or sleet but they’ve done well when running in the rain.

New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v11

  • Price: $$$
  • Pros: good fit for feet that need slightly more room than standard shoes provide, available in a lot of colors, ultra-cushioned lightweight ride
  • Cons: pricier than other shoes, thick sole, may not be wide enough for really wide feet

New Balance tops the list of brands that specialize in wide feet. But sometimes, wide and W-wide shoes are too big for certain feet. And thats where the Fresh Foam 1080v11 comes in. This running shoe is designed for slightly wider than average feet, giving runners just a bit more room in the toe box, and its also available in wide sizes.

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v11 is also versatile, lightweight, and flexible. Plus, this stylish option boasts extra cushioning that cradles your foot from heel to toe, making it a top pick for long training runs, short distances, gym workouts, and daily use.

Customers rave about the comfort, stability, and support these shoes provide during daily use and while running. However, some find the fit not wide enough for extra-wide feet.

We chatted with eight experts to get their takes on what mattersand what doesntin a running shoes design and how to find ones that are right for you. Here are the experts we spoke with:

Colleen Brough, DPT, is an assistant professor of rehabilitation and regenerative medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and director of the Columbia RunLab. Brough answered our questions about the relationship between running shoes and injuries, and how tools like gait analysis factor into finding the right pair of shoes.

What Can You Do With Old Running Shoes

It is generally advised that you retire your running shoes after youve run 300 to 500 miles in them. But that doesnt mean your favorite pair is unusable at that point. According to estimates by the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans funneled more than 9 million tons of clothing and footwearrunning shoes includedinto landfills in 2018. Running shoes, which are composed of multiple materials bonded together, arent typically recyclable. But donated shoes in a range of conditions can be put to use. If youd like to delay or avoid throwing away your old trainers, there are ways to do it.

How To Find The Right Fit

Comfort is, of course, subjective. However, there are some general guidelines you can use to help ensure that running shoes fit you correctly:

Be flexible about sizing: Common running-shoe advice is to buy a shoe thats a half-size or even a full size up from your street-shoe size, to account for your feet swelling while you run. However, after talking to brand representatives and industry experts, we learned that shoe sizing is more of an art than a science. Shoes are typically designed around whats called a last. A last is a three-dimensional form that mimics the shape of a human foot, and its created in a sample size based on the sizing scale in a companys country of origin . From there, the additional sizes are scaled, and international size conversions are marked based on a companys proprietary charts. Therefore, every brands sizes are a little different. The bottom line: Use your normal running-shoe size as a starting point, but dont be shy about sizing up to find your best fit.

Make sure you have at least a thumbs width of space between your longest toe and the end of your shoe.

Shop with a goal in mind: Consider what you want most out of the pair of shoes youre buying. If its distance, pay attention to cushioning. If its speed, focus on the weight and responsiveness. Think about where you are now, and where you want to be in the next 300 to 500 miles, said Kann. Thats approximately how long a pair of shoes should last.

Premium Running Shoes Vs Cheap Running Shoes

The 10 Best Running Shoes For Short Distance Races

A high price tag is not a guarantee that a shoe is better than another. This said, we always recommend to shop for running shoes that have a recommended retail price of $100 or more. This does not mean you need to pay more than $100! New versions of running shoes are released every year and most often than not changes versus the previous version are small and incremental in nature. This means that instead of buying this year version of a shoe, you can very often buy last years model for a fraction of the price, often as low as 50% less.

Best Racing Shoes For Marathons

The Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% is built exclusively for marathon runners, delivering a high level of bounce, a supremely supportive foot feel, and a design that limits stress on your legs.

Pros: Incredibly bouncy shoe that reduces stress on your legs while propelling you forward encourages efficient strides even after many miles contoured, supportive fit

Cons: Expensive heavier than competing racing shoes

Yes, the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next% is the shoe that Kenyan sensation, Eliud Kipchoge, used to smash the once deemed impossible-to-break two-hour barrier in the marathon but that’s not why I recommend it as the best marathon shoe. In short, the Nike Alphafly is all about the bounce.

These were the bounciest shoes I’ve ever run in, and they gave me some much-needed spring during long runs. I also noticed some incredible energy return, thanks to its full-length carbon fiber plate that produced the snappiest response of the shoes I tested. Nike calls it the Flyplate and it’s partially exposed in the forefoot area of the outsole to give it space to flex. The thickness of the plate is scaled to the size of the shoe, so it’s more flexible in smaller sizes and stiffer in larger shoes to produce the same propulsive effect.

How We Choose Our Selection Of Running Shoes For Kids

Brand There are endless brands of footwear available in the marketplace but not all brands can be trusted to produce footwear that is suitable for kids. Thats why we only considered brands that have a proven reputation for creating designs that provide quality and comfort. This is especially important when running shoes for kids are involved because these shoes will be put through their paces. Our brands are the leaders in design, style and functionality.

Reviews When it comes to kids running shoes, its highly unlikely the kids will be the ones writing them. Their parents, on the other hand, will be more than happy to share their experiences. Reviews can tell us a lot about a product and main points parents will discuss the running shoes they purchased for their kids will be things like value for money, durability, fit and comfort. Kids will also have an indirect input into reviews, if not a direct one. If they do not like their running shoes for whatever reason, you can be sure they will be very vocal about them to their parents. This will especially be the case where comfort is concerned. We look at the positive and negative points in reviews so that we can determine which features are winners and which are not for consideration.
