Daily Training Running Shoes Vs Racing/speedwork Running Shoes

The last distinction we want to highlight is the difference between high mileage, every day shoes vs shoes for speedwork and racing.

It has become a common practice for runners all over the world to have at least two separate pair of shoes:

  • A pair of traditional, highly cushioned and comfortable running shoes in which they log the majority of their training mileage. These shoes are usually heavier and with a high drop.
  • A pair of lightweight, low drop shoes to be used when they train at slower distances and higher paces. Or on race day.

An Even Softer Midsole

Road Trail Run: The 5 Best Light Performance Trainer & Road Racing ...

Brooks removed the BioMoGo DNA portion of the midsole, so the Ghost 14 has only DNA Loft foam, just like its plusher counterpart, the Glycerin. Our testers didnt detect any change with this adjustment.

It had a nice balance of cushioning and firmness during turnover, said a tester, adding that the Ghost felt more responsive than the Glycerin and Adrenaline GTS. I personally wont use these for speedwork or short-distance races, but it was faster than I expected.

Heel and midfoot strikers described the cushioning as not too soft, yet appreciated how fresh their legs felt as they ran high mileage on hard surfaces. Brooks also improved the fit of the Ghost, a welcome update, since the 13 ran a little short. The upper mesh material is really awesome, said a tester. It stretches but doesnt feel sloppy inside.

The Ghost is a promising first step toward another of Brookss goals: to produce zero footwear manufacturing waste, which it aims to reach by 2025. Its an ambitious eco initiative, but as with any race, you reach the finish line step by step.

Lower Heel Drop + Cushion

I ran in the very first model of this shoe and was surprised just how much I loved the maximal shoe.

It was cushioned without being heavy and and feeling clunky. But a real bonus of Hoka shoes is that the maximal style while being a neutral shoe with a lower heel drop, is by default more stable!

Yes that means it could make your knees and hips feel better.

Ive now tested about 5 or so models of Hoka shoes, including the most recent Clifton. You can see how the Hoka running shoes comparison in this post.

Suffice to say that if you are looking for a marathon training shoe, this would be my pick for getting cushion without it being too soft.

  • Current model is the Clifton 8
  • Neutral running shoe
  • Great cushioning
  • 7 oz

In fact, since then Ive tested out and compared Hoka models many times over the years.

Minimal Vs Maximal Running Shoes

In a nutshell minimal vs maximal refers to the amount of cushioning that the shoe gives to the runners.

Starting in 2009, more and more runners have been promoting a barefoot running idea: shoes are bad for you, you should run barefoot or, if that is not possible, with as little shoe as possible. Milions of runners made the switch to minimalism and quite a few got injured. As a result, companies came out with running shoes that are lightweight but with very high, soft soles that really cushion the foot.

There is not a right or wrong type of shoe here it entirely depends on the runner, their style and preferences.

How Do We Test The Best Running Shoes

We also try and verify manufacturer claims about performance details such as ‘twice as fast as its predecessor’ or ‘improved grip’, where applicable. If it’s not possible, we’ll refer to these features as ‘manufacturer claims’.

It’s worth mentioning that most people have different running styles, so running shoes that work for one runner might not work for another. Please keep this in mind when reading our reviews.

Which Shoes Do Marathon Runners Wear

How to Choose Road Running Shoes | REI

Just like shoes come in all shapes and sizes, so do marathon runners . That’s why there’s not one specific shoe that all marathon runners wear. These long-distance runners do tend to lean toward the same features, though. Most marathon runners agree that they look for stability, excellent grip, adequate cushion, and good rebound. Many also prefer lighter-weight shoes that won’t weigh them down.

Best Running Shoes To Buy In 2021

The Adidas 4DFWD is not the cheapest running trainer, and admittedly, the limited drop nature of the initial release won’t help make these the go-to shoes for most runners. Nevertheless, we’d highly recommend getting a pair if you have the chance, as the 4DFWD represents the next step in running shoe evolution.

As well as that and in line with Adidas’ efforts to reduce plastic waste, the 4DFWD is not a bad choice for environmentally conscious runners. Don’t get me wrong, buying a pair of running shoes won’t save the planet, but if you have to buy new running shoes, you might as well get a pair from a manufacturer that pays some attention to environmental-friendliness. Adidas at least tries to make a difference, which is admirable.

All things considered, the Adidas 4DFWD are great running shoes, probably the best running shoes from Adidas at the moment for runners who are looking for something a bit more serious than the Ultraboost 21 but less sporty than the Adizero Adios Pro. And taking into account the normal distribution curve, that’s the majority of the runners.

Adidas 4DFWD was crowned ‘Best Running Shoes’ at the T3 Awards 2021. Read our full Adidas 4DFWD reviewto find out why

New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v1: The Best Running Shoes For Beginners

Price: £135 |Buy mens | womens from New Balance

The New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v11 is a comfortable shoe with plenty of cushioning, which will help protect your body from the impact of running when you first start out in the sport. Dont let the ample cushioning fool you into thinking this is a slow shoe, though, because the 1080v11 will help carry you to your first few PBs if you do start racing, and its a great option for long-distance events like the marathon in particular.

In the midsole, you have New Balances Fresh Foam cushioning, which delivers a stable ride thats the right level of firm to be comfortable without becoming so squishy that you lose speed with each stride.

At £135, some beginners might consider the 1080v11 a little pricey for a first shoe, but its a durable option and, if you stick with the sport, youll get your moneys worth out of it. Moreover, its a long-running line and you can often nab a previous version in sales, with the 1080v10 being very similar to the next edition.

Aside from some minor upper tweaks and a jazzy new set of colourways, Saucony basically changed nothing about the Saucony Endorphin Speed with the second edition. Were thankful for that, because the original Speed was a terrific shoe and the second is just as great.

Nike Zoom X Invincible Run

Price: £160

Weight: 314g , 253g

Heel/toe drop: 9mm

Type: Road/Neutral

If you had to describe the Zoom X Invincible Run in one word, it would be fun. Our runners were keen to tell us how much they enjoyed running in this new model the enormous amount of cushioning meant their feet felt wrapped securely in a gentle bear hug. It meant they didnt have to worry about how to land, where to place their feet or, indeed, think about anything they could just run. Postrun feedback was positive, too, with several testers reporting less muscle pain than normal. Nike will be pleased to hear this because that is precisely what it was trying to achieve with this shoe. Theres more of Nikes premium Zoom X foam than you can shake a stick at, the last of the shoe is generous, with a flared, squarish heel section that heel strikers loved, and theres a rocker shape to the midsole to help roll your foot through to toe-off a bit quicker. Breathability is only average and lighter testers found it a tad cumbersome, but this wont be an issue for mid-pack runners.

Does A Shoes Cushioning Matter

Amazon.com

Some runners care a lot about weight, and research shows that you expend more aerobic energy with heavier shoes. Lighter shoes typically have less cushioning, which can make them feel faster, but new midsole foams now make a plush ride possible without adding much heft to the shoe. If youre going long distances, some extra cushioning might be a better option, as it provides impact absorption.

To test softness, we go to our Shoe Lab to take individual measurements of both the heel and forefoot, since the overall experience can vary based on where a runner touches down and toes off. The cushioning scores are given on a scale of 1 to 100, with one being the firmest. In addition to those key stats, we also look at the shoes stability features, flexibility, and energy return to help you find one youll love.

New Balance Fuelcell Rc Elite V2

Buy now: SportsShoes / New Balance | $224.95

It doesn’t seem long ago that the first carbon plate shoes that weren’t made by Nike hit the market. Now many brands are producing new iterations of their own carbon plate lines, often with vast improvements on previous versions.

The New Balance Fuelcell RC Elite V2 is a prime example of that, taking the competent RC Elite and flicking the volume dial up a few notches. The bulk of that advancement has come in the form of a more pronounced plate for propulsion and a healthy increase in the amount of midsole foam.

When you first get your hands on the Elite V2, you immediately notice how incredibly soft that midsole foam really is. To the touch, it’s like pressing down on a marshmallow a sensation that produces a noticeable level of bounce when you take them out for a run.

Like the Nike Vaporfly, it’s a sensation that seems to absorb the energy from every stride and returns it back in the form of a light, fluid motion that makes racing feel significantly more efficient. Is it as good as the Nike Vaporfly? It’s definitely one of the most similar super shoes we’ve tried, however, the softness may not be to everyone’s taste.

Best Running Shoes For Supination

Running is one of the best exercises to burn fat because you instantly burn calories.

Your lungs get more robust, and your breath becomes more profound. Your hearts become more trained because its a muscle itself.

But what is supination? Why can supination be a problem for those who like running?

Everyone knows good posture is beneficial to your health. Supination is a situation where people tend to put most of their weight, or even all of it, on the outside of their foot.

They tend to have structural issues because they force their feet in excessive running, jogging, and even walking.

It can be dangerous for your ankles, knees, hips, and bones.

The overall feeling of sore feet cannot be too bad, but putting stress on your feet for a more extended period can create problems that cannot be erased later.

Thats why you have to invest in great running shoes. Even if you dont run but only walk or jog, you should pay attention to how your feet feel in your shoes.

If you have appropriate sneakers, you can save yourself money, time, and energy. Lets not even mention that you will keep your knees and hips along with your ankles.

What should you be looking for in shoes appropriate for supination?

First and foremost, high arches. Your feet have to fit perfectly in the Shoe, and you shouldnt feel an excessive weight on any part.

Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next%: The Best Racing Shoes

Price: £260 | Buy men’s | women’s from Nike

The Alphafly is the successor to the all-conquering Vaporfly and the shoe Eliud Kipchoge wore when he ran the first sub-2 marathon at an unofficial event in Vienna in 2019. When official races do return, you can be sure youll be seeing this distinctive shoe on the feet of many top athletes.

Nike has built-on the success of the Vaporfly by updating the design to include two Air Zoom pods under the forefoot. These are firmer and more responsive than the ZoomX cushioning used in the rest of the midsole, and add a little more pep to your toe-off. As a result, the Alphafly is an even better option for long races, where the carbon plate and bouncy cushioning help you to maintain your pace all the way to the finish line.

The massive stack of cushioning does mean the shoe can feel unwieldy when turning sharp corners, but once youre up to speed youll barely notice it. You will notice the hole in your bank balance, though clearly thats not deterring runners chasing a PB, because the shoe is often out of stock everywhere.

The second version of the Flow Velociti Wind is largely the same as the original apart from a redesigned heel section that creates a tighter, more secure fit around the back of your foot to avoid any rubbing of the achilles tendon.

Comfort Above Anything Else

Best Road Running Shoe 2021. HFS from Xero Shoes. Minimalist Barefoot Lightweight Zero Drop

In a study that analyzed 40 years of running injuries, researchers found that comfort plays a significant factor in reducing injuries.

Comfort is made of:

  • Perfect size. If youre not sure which size you need, check our ultimate size guide.
  • Perfect fit. This means your shoe isnt too tight nor it feels too loose around your heel or forefoot. Additionally, no part of the shoe should give you discomfort – there should be no pinching nor uncomfortably tight areas.
  • Cushioning. Its that soft foamy layer that makes your feet experience walking on clouds feeling.

Research has shown that comfort might go as far as improving the running economy and decreasing injury risk . Runners usually report more comfort with more cushioning.

Typically, lightweight running shoes offer less cushioning, and we therefore generally dont recommend beginners to pick running shoes that weigh less than 250 grams. This way, youll leave aside two extremes: racing flats and extremely bulky running shoes. More experienced runners can find joy in having a pair of lightweight running shoes for their speed runs.
