Medicare Supplement Plans With Silver Sneakers

Should Silver Sneakers Coverage Impact Your Medicare Coverage Choices

Is Silver Sneakers Part of Medicare?

No. While Silver Sneakers is a great plan, you should not make health insurance choices based on the program itself. You should always choose your Medicare plan and evaluate your Medicare coverage options based on your medical and health needs. Making sure your doctor is in-network or that your prescriptions and pharmacy are in-network is always more important than selecting a plan for the non-Medicare related benefits. There are a few reasons why.

Medicare Supplement Plan G

Medigap Plan G tops our list as one of the top Medicare Supplement plans in 2023. We like Medicare Plan G because it offers the second-highest level of benefits but at a lower monthly premium.

Medicare Supplement rates for Plan G range between $240 and $480 less each year compared to Plan F, the markets most comprehensive Supplement insurance plan. In addition, while Plan F has eligibility restrictions based on the date you could purchase Medicare, Plan G doesnt.

Once a beneficiary meets the Plan G deductible for each calendar year, the plan covers benefits at 100 percent.

Medigap Plan G is a good option for beneficiaries who:

  • Have a lot of office visits or pre-existing conditions
  • Require frequent emergency care
  • See health care providers not signed up with Medicare
  • Became eligible for Medicare on or after Jan. 1, 2020.

Benefits not included in Medigap Plan G or high deductible Plan G:

  • Part B deductible

How Does Medicare Plan G Work

Plan G is a supplemental Medigap health insurance plan that is available to individuals who are disabled or over the age of 65 and currently enrolled in both Part A and Part B of Medicare. Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medicare supplement plans that are available to purchase.

Plan G is a supplemental policy, meaning itâs not your primary coverage but fills many of the gaps in a Medicare policy. Part A or Part B benefits pay for health services you may need.

Once Medicare pays its share, Plan G pays for most remaining costs.

Plan G also covers some of the expenses related to your Medicare policy. For example, Medicare Part A has a deductible of $1,556 in 2022. If you donât have Plan G, you pay that deductible out of pocket. But with Plan G coverage, your health insurer pays the entire deductible.

Medicare Plan N Vs Plan G

11 Burning Questions About SilverSneakersAnswered!

When compared to Medicare supplement Plan N, Plan G provides more comprehensive coverage. Both policies will not cover the Part B deductible however, Plan N will not pay for expenses related to the Medicare Part B excess charges. Excess charges can occur when there is a difference between what is billed to Medicare for your treatment and what is actually paid by Medicare. This difference would be paid for you out of pocket if you had Plan N, for example.

However, since Plan N has less coverage, the monthly premium for the policy will be less than Plan G. For 2020, Plan N will cost between $149 and $289 per month.

Medicare Providers That Cover Silversneakers

Several large health insurance companies provide SilverSneakers membership at no cost to enrollees. This makes sense, as insurance providers have a financial interest in the long-term health of their customers and exercising has proven to have tremendous benefits. For this reason as well, many companies even incentivize this behavior by offering free perks to members, like gym membership or fitness classes.

Many private insurers include SilverSneakers in their Medicare Advantage plans. Some Medicare Supplement plans may cover it as well. However, this availability varies depending on the state you live in and the plan you subscribe to.

Lots Of Seniors Are Overweight But Few Use Free Counseling For It

AARP Dropping Silver Sneakers and ALTERNATIVES!

Altogether, more than 5 million customers have been affected. But the company is making market-by-market decisions, and nearly 675,000 UnitedHealthcare Medigap policyholders and 1.9 million UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan members will retain access to SilverSneakers in 2019.

I think its a smart move, said Connie Holt, an independent broker with Goldsum Insurance Solutions of Pleasant Hill, Calif.

But many of the companys customers arent happy that SilverSneakers, which offers group classes tailored to seniors in addition to gym access at 15,000 sites, is disappearing. And confusion about alternatives is widespread.

Its one of the top topics that seniors have been raising over the past few months when they call Ohios Senior Health Insurance Information Program, said Chris Reeg, the OSHIIP program director.

Michael Chanak Jr., 69, of Wadsworth, Ohio, had problems getting through to UnitedHealthcares customer relations department several times when he called with questions a common complaint. The way this is being implemented is a train wreck, said Chanak, who has a UnitedHealthcare Medicare supplemental policy and spends an hour every day exercising at his gym.

People are extremely upset, wrote Margaret Lee of Arroyo Grande, Calif., in an email. Thats about the only topic of conversation at my water exercise class!

In an email, Mark Bagley, a spokesman for the organization, said , not AARP, operates these plans and determines the benefits.

Is Silver& Fit The Same As Silversneakers

Silver& Fit is similar to and is sometimes mistaken for another Medicare fitness program called SilverSneakers.

Both companies offer group fitness classes and exercise opportunities to improve general fitness, strength, flexibility, and walking ability. Both also partner with Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans to provide their benefit. Eligibility for both programs is generally the same.

SilverSneakers offers benefits at more than 17,000 locations nationwide and offers seven types of classes including classic, circuit, cardio fit, boom programs, splash, stability, and yoga.

The main difference between the two programs are locations, types of classes, and home fitness availability.

Before committing to one or the other, its probably best to see which one gives you access to more locations in your immediate area. If you dont have a gym or fitness center in your immediate area, or you cant go to a gym for any reason, Silver& Fit offers home fitness kits so you can exercise at home.
