First Run: Under Armours Smart Shoes

New built-in tech will automatically track your runs and the shoes total mileage.

How many times have you gone a mile into a run only to realize you forgot to start your watch? Or maybe you finished the run and left the tracking device going for 20 minutes. What about those times your phone or watch ran out of power?

Wouldnt you like to head out the door without strapping on or carrying anything, without thinking about starting or stopping anythingand still have your run measured and logged? Under Armour wants to grant that wish.

On Leap Day, February 29, the company will release its first Record Equipped shoe with the built-in ability to track your runs. Under Armour calls it untethered running and believes it is the future of footwear.

A lightweight, dime-sized chip embedded in the midsole of UAs SpeedForm Gemini 2 RE wakes every time you move the shoe . It senses a run whenever you start moving faster than 11 minutes per mile and begins tracking you using built-in accelerometers that measure your stride dynamics. While the chip does not have GPS and can’t map your run, the formulas that interpret your stride promise to calculate distance at close to the same accuracyand it will work on a treadmill. The chip will keep the run going during short stops, but ends the workout for any complete stops longer than three minutes. It begins recording a new run if you start up again.

Your Shoes Will Track Your Steps

As consumers continue to adopt healthier lifestyles and experiment with wearable tracking technology like Fitbit, Staple said he believes we’ll see an increase in shoes with tracking capabilities.

While companies like Nike and Under Armour have previously offered smart training shoes as early as 2012, these models were more flash-in-the-pan offerings that didn’t resonate with consumers, according to technology website Wareable.

“The truth is these smart shoes haven’t really ever taken hold,” Wareable writer Keiran Alger wrote. “Nike’s Training + shoes quietly disappeared not long after the big marketing fanfare had faded, while Under Armour and Altra’s connected shoes haven’t really made a dent in the traditional shoe space. At least not yet.”

But Nike and Under Armour gave shoes with tracking chips another shot when they both rolled out refreshed models in February 2018.

“Even something like a Fitbit or a watch, for as discreet as that is, it’s still another thing that you have to put on it,” Staple said. “For watch or jewelry fans, if you’re wearing a FitBit or Apple Watch, you can’t wear your Rolex or Chanel bracelet, too, it’s kind of like give or take. So putting it into the shoes is awesome because you’re going to be wearing shoes when you go out.”

Importance Of Correct Running Form

Adjoin Steps Orange Running Shoes

Running is a popular fitness activity because of its health benefits, affordability and convenience. However the sport can cause injuries, often due to overtraining and people doing too much, too soon.

There are over 36 million active runners in the US and over 60% get some sort of injury each year. Overuse injuries can occur from training errors such as running frequency, speed, lack of leg strength and flexibility alongside many other factors.

The advantage of purchasing trackers that are located on your feet are that some of these devices improve not just how far and how fast you run, but also how well you run. They do this through parameters related to your running form such as foot landing, cadence, balance and time on the ground metrics which you cannot get from wrist based trackers.

Correct form is very important for runners at all levels. Its not enough to simply focus on training, nutrition and hydration. Good posture and proper technique helps you move more efficiently, avoid injury and have a positive mental outlook.

You can take time to educate yourself or fork out for a fitness coach. But there may be a better way. The next level up from simply dishing out statistics, a growing number of wearables is providing users with real-time analysis of running form.

These Under Armour Shoes Have A Smart Chip To Track Your Runs And They’re 45% Off Right Now

Style, comfort, and tech-infused. These are running sneakers from the future.

If you want to break from the mold and try a bold, stylish, comfortable “smart” running shoe, we have just what you need. Instead of going Nike or Adidas, consider a pair from Under Armour.

UA has plenty of fans on its own, but when we saw they’re offering the excellent HOVR Phantom 2 shoes for 45 percent off we had to share. That’s just $83, instead of the regular $150 price tag. Under Armour took its most popular running shoes and redesigned the top with a closed, flat-knit upper that delivers a sock-like feel to make them more comfortable and reassuring during runs.

These types of slip-on shoes aren’t for everyone, but once you get familiar with how it feels, you’ll never want to go back to open shoes. I have a pair and think they’re fantastic.

It doesn’t hurt that Under Armour uses an external heel design for added support or that the HOVR technology, like Nike’s Air, provides a zero-gravity feeling that minimizes the impact from each step. That’s a fancy way of saying they’re super padded, wickedly comfortable, and you’ll enjoy running in them.

Another excellent aspect of these running shoes, aside from the stylish good looks, is the smart chip built-in. This chip connects to the UA MapMyRun app, which tracks all sorts of things to help runners train, improve, reach goals, and more. Plus, who doesn’t love a pair of red shoes?

The Shoes Of The Future

In many ways, future shoes are already here. Wearable technology can track data, collect and interpret it in meaningful ways to improve athletic performance, enrich online gaming and improve the quality of life of physically impaired users. However, as smart insoles and shoes become increasingly popular and their use more widespread, their capabilities are certain to improve. Soon, you could get live coaching feedback while you work out, as a smart assistant talks you through your run. One day, your running data could be used to optimize your next pair of custom 3D-printed running shoes. As hardware and materials continue to improve, it may even become possible to automatically and dynamically adapt the sole and cushioning to running conditions, increasing grip as you move to unsteady ground or softening the insole on hard asphalt.A more holistic approach could see tracking technology applied to all shoes and the resulting data linked with other health and fitness information. This would allow you to see patterns and connections between everyday habits and athletic performance, overall fitness and specific challenges, perhaps even physical, mental health and general wellbeing.

Tires and shoe soles have something in common: They provide the grip that keeps us on track. For the past ten years, adidas has relied on our material expertise to keep their shoes grounded, no matter where their journey takes them.
