How We Test Shoes

Best Altra Road Running Shoes | How To Find Your Perfect Trainer!

Runners World has the most comprehensive shoe testing process in the industry. We work with more than 250 local runners of all abilities, ages, and sizes for real-world wear-testing on paved roads, dirt paths, and rocky singletrack. After a month of running more than 100 miles in their respective pairs, our testers report back their findings on features like fit, comfort, performance, and ride. While theyre putting miles on the shoes, the same models undergo a battery of mechanical tests in our RW Shoe Lab, where we objectively measure each shoes cushioning, flexibility, sole thickness, and weight. Our test editors combine their own experience in the shoes with data from the lab and feedback from our wear testers to create reliable, useful reviews of every pair we run in.

Brooks Hyperion Elite 2

Buy now: Brooks / Brooks | $250

After the launch of the disappointing Hyperion Elite earlier in the year, Brooks has come back for round two with a significantly more impressive carbon fibre contender.

Although it may not quite have the noticeable energy return that you’ll find in Nike’s leading carbon race shoes, the Elite is a great all-round option for racing whether you’re aiming for a Parkrun PB or you going for a full marathon distance. At those longer distances, it delivers a consistently comfortable ride that keeps your legs feeling fresh for miles.

As well as a light, comfortable upper, the Elite 2 has additional support in the heel section, which makes for a nice secure fit. For us, it’s also a noticeably more stable shoe than some of the high stack carbon plate options out there.

Under Armour’s latest speed-friendly running shoe comes with a personal running coach that when connected to MapMyRun tracks your stride length, cadence and pace and coaching you in real-time. As for the shoes, these kicks are designed for shorter sharper sessions but unlike some running trainers designed for speed work, they still come with decent cushioning. The sole is shaped with a slight rock to propel you with every stride. Why thank you.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus series has long been a favourite for daily training miles, but it has seen a number of modifications over the years that make the most recent version noticeably different to previous iterations.

It’s a shoe that’s built predominantly for workhorse training, delivering a good level of cushioning without being too soft. The React foam midsole feels comfortable for covering high mileage but still has a competent level of responsiveness if you want to pick up the pace.

For the price, it’s a great option for beginners that want a versatile shoe as well as seasoned runners that need something durable instead of wearing away more expensive race and tempo training shoes.

There aren’t many changes to the previous Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37, so if you can find a pair of those on the cheap we’d suggest picking a pair up, although you can often find the 38 on sale now anyway. It’s also a competent shoe for those runners looking to hit lighter trails due to a thick outsole rubber.

Lateral Stability And Support

It’s important to feel stable while running to reduce the chance of pain or injury. Our test lineup has a wide range of offerings with different levels of stability for every type of runner. Some of you may need or want a supportive, grounded feel others may put less emphasis on this metric for a more lively model. We tested each shoe over various gradients and surfaces to give you our top picks that were both stable and supportive.

The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 and Brooks Ghost 14 provide excellent support and stability, which led to a grounded feel where each footstrike felt precise and well planted. Both of these models have a 12-millimeter heel-to-toe drop which keeps your heel engaged with the ground more often to offer stability through the heel, ankle, and knees. The Adrenaline has added Guiderails support features that help keep your foot balanced and stable. Both of these models could help if you experience pronation problems. Remember to seek a professional’s help before self-diagnosing pronation problems. Choosing the wrong model could lead to even great problems in the future.

Also high on our list was the Asics Gel-Kayano 28, a classic design that offers a unique gel compound that is not found in other models. There is also substantial underfoot arch support which enhances the sense of stability and support. This shoe felt wide enough to offer a natural foot position which helped maintain stability on uneven surfaces.

What Is Your Foot Type

Another factor you need to consider in selecting your road running shoe is the type of gait that you have. Wearing a road running shoe with the correct arch support is also useful when traversing rough and rigid surfaces, like gravel.

If you have high arches, a neutral shoe will provide the right amount of support for you. This kind of road shoe has ample cushioning that adds comfort and prevents pain when running. The cushion also provides shock absorption, which is something your foot might lack.

On the other hand, if your feet are in any way overpronating, a good road running shoe maybe something in between stability or motion control shoe. Both these shoes aid the foot in correcting overpronation by providing varying degrees of arch support.

Minimal Vs Maximal Running Shoes

Mens

In a nutshell minimal vs maximal refers to the amount of cushioning that the shoe gives to the runners.

Starting in 2009, more and more runners have been promoting a barefoot running idea: shoes are bad for you, you should run barefoot or, if that is not possible, with as little shoe as possible. Milions of runners made the switch to minimalism and quite a few got injured. As a result, companies came out with running shoes that are lightweight but with very high, soft soles that really cushion the foot.

There is not a right or wrong type of shoe here it entirely depends on the runner, their style and preferences.

New Balance Fuelcell Rc Elite V2

Buy now: SportsShoes / New Balance | $224.95

It doesn’t seem long ago that the first carbon plate shoes that weren’t made by Nike hit the market. Now many brands are producing new iterations of their own carbon plate lines, often with vast improvements on previous versions.

The New Balance Fuelcell RC Elite V2 is a prime example of that, taking the competent RC Elite and flicking the volume dial up a few notches. The bulk of that advancement has come in the form of a more pronounced plate for propulsion and a healthy increase in the amount of midsole foam.

When you first get your hands on the Elite V2, you immediately notice how incredibly soft that midsole foam really is. To the touch, it’s like pressing down on a marshmallow a sensation that produces a noticeable level of bounce when you take them out for a run.

Like the Nike Vaporfly, it’s a sensation that seems to absorb the energy from every stride and returns it back in the form of a light, fluid motion that makes racing feel significantly more efficient. Is it as good as the Nike Vaporfly? It’s definitely one of the most similar super shoes we’ve tried, however, the softness may not be to everyone’s taste.

What To Look For

The best long-distance running shoes share standout features with the best running shoes overall in terms of comfort, longevity, and value. However, more time on your feet could mean that your foot benefits from a wider toe box and a more expansive upper in case of swelling. Typically, we also find that very experienced runners will fare better than newbies in more minimalist shoes, as well-honed gait mechanics can help lessen the need for added cushioning. First-time marathoners, on the other hand, usually appreciate the extra padding of a heavier trainer and its help in getting them to the starting line injury-free.

Since youll be putting in a lot of miles, a durable outsole will also be key: Solid rubber tends to last longer than the more flexible blown rubber, though the latter can add to the softness and cushioning of the shoe. At the midsole, thermoplastic polyurethane foam can provide more longevity than ethylene vinyl acetate foam, though will usually add more weight to the shoe overall. For this reason, many shoe brands have developed their own proprietary blends that incorporate a mix of both foams. Currently, one of the lightest and most responsive midsole materials is a polyether block amide elastomer, usually referred to as Pebax. Youll find it used in higher-end foams like Nikes ZoomX and Sauconys Pwrrun PBthe drawback is that its expensive. Heres more if you want to go deep on what makes a good running shoe.

Brooks Adrenaline Gts 21

Best for most people: About three years ago, Brooks revamped the way they created stability shoes, says Kaufman. When the company added what they call a GuideRail that wraps around your heel to many of their shoes, it made them work for a significantly larger number of runners, offering a shoe with more universal stability and cushioning. It provides that sweet spot: It doesnt over correct or under correct your stride.

Im a runner. Im one of those weirdos who likes stomping along trails in the pouring rain, who has, on many occasions, clicked off miles on a busy state highway, and who truly enjoys the feeling of being laid out on the living room floor after a hot summer day’s run. Lacing up my shoes is also one of my favorite ways to explore a new place. One of the first things I do after dropping my bags in a hotel room is go for four or five miles through the neighborhood or a nearby park.

One of the best things about running is that you really only need a single piece of equipment: a comfortable pair of shoes that fit well. To that end, I asked Tom Kaufman of Movin Shoes in Madison, Wisconsin, to recommend running shoes for all sorts of different people and different situations.

Whether you need extra support or want something more lightweight, prefer mountain trails or need a pair of racers for your next 10K or marathon, theres something for you in the bunch. You’ll also find recommendations from ultramarathoners and casual runners alike, as well as a sustainably made pick that one Traveler editor cant do without.

What Are Flat Feet

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, means that the entire sole of the foot touches the ground.

Studies indicate that approximately 27% of the population has flat feet, so if this is you, youre not alone! Thats over 1/4 of folks out there.

Runners with flat feet tend to overpronate, which is when the foot rolls inward after landing. This sends strain up the knee and hip and can lead to injury.

Often this is felt in the ankles, knees and hips making running more uncomfortable.

Each time the foot rolls inward, it pulls the knee in pulling tendons, ligaments and joints out of alignment.

For this reason, its important to pay attention to the type of shoes that are most suitable for flat feet. You could also look to a good running insole for support if youve found a shoe that you already love the feel of, but arent getting enough support.
