Reviews For The Muck Boot Arctic Sport Boots

5 Best Snow Boots for Men|Best Mens Winter Boots 2018|Waterproof Snow Boots

The Muck Boot Arctic Sport mens boot earned these ratings: Amazon , Business Insider , Strategist , Wirecutter , Gearhungry , Outdoor Time , Outside Online , Outdoor Gear Lab , Travel Gear Zone , Good Housekeeping , Tractor Supply Company , Fleet Farm , Popular Mechanics , Cold Outdoorsman .

  • Amazon users knew exactly what they wanted from working through Alaskan winters to a blustery, -20 stroll around Michigans Mackinac Island: function over frills. An overwhelming majority of reviewers raved about the warmth , the waterproofness, and the traction on ice. They also warned that these run big, so order true to size.

  • Outdoor Gear Lab called them meant for those who need a boot for the worst weather, since they tend to run a too warm for year-round use. They also warned about using the Arctic Sports on steep, snowy hills, as the traction wasnt phenomenal. Overall, they found that these Muck Boots outperformed their Boggs counterparts in a few areas: Let’s start with the pros: good arch support, cushiony insole, neoprene shaft that provides good mobility, and a fleecy lining that adds comfort. Now, on to the cons: sole is thick and stiff, it’s one of the heaviest/bulkiest in the review, and there’s a fair amount of heel slippage. Overall, we liked walking in the Bogs Classic High better because of its lower, more flexible sole, but the Muck Boots do provide more arch support and have the fleecy lining.

The Best Mens Winter Boot: Sorel Caribou

The Sorel Caribouboots have been kicking winters butt since the 1960s. And boy, can they pack a wallop. While known for their clunky-chore-boot charm, the Caribous have been keeping our toes ultra- toasty and feet dry in an 80 year spree with no end in sight. My father has owned his pair of Sorel Caribous since 1992. Ive never seen a winter without him wearing those boot from New York to Colorado to Maine! In fact, many reviewers brought up family members having owned these boots for 15+ years, and still going strong. Theyre so beloved that they are also the Winner of our Womens Winter Boot for Extreme Cold.

Replaceable fleece-lining on the Caribous means that you can keep using these boots for decades.

The removable liner is made from 9mm ThermoPlus insulation, which features four layers of protection polypropylene, foil, polyester, and viscose. According to hundreds of reviewers, there are no warmer boots on the market. Outdoor Gear Lab says, provides ample warmth in the double negative digits. These boots are rated by Sorel down to -40 the author can tell you theyre quite comfy down to at least -20 her father heartily concurs.

The Sorel Caribou are the classic winter boot.

Our second choice for best overall was the classic L.L. Bean duck boot, but in the end, we found that the Sorel Caribous were more highly rated as a classic mens snow bootand warmer, too.

How We Judged The Best Winter Boots

From the hundreds of winter boots on the market, we knew we had to cull the posers from the real deals. We wanted boots that could withstand the range of weather conditions that winter can throw our way. We researched the best boots for icy conditions, wet conditions, snowy conditions, and extreme cold conditions that were comfortable, provided good arch support, and were waterproof. We also wanted to find high-quality, durable materials without breaking the bank.

As we researched, we narrowed our criteria to meet five main themes: warmth, tread, waterproofness, fit, and height.

Our winners met all of our basic criteria. Then, we judged each pair of boots relative to its own specific criteria. For example, for the Best Budget Boots, they needed to be warm, comfortable, over the ankle, and reasonably durable at an affordable price. Our Best Traction and Ankle Support Boots had to have great ankle and arch support, combined with a killer tread for icy conditions. We also wanted to provide options for the Best Slip-On Boots in both insulated and non-insulated options and present the pros and cons of both.

Then our Best Traction and Ankle Support Boot might just be the ticket.

Men’s Winter Boot Features

Men

Warmth: Some insulated winter boots use branded fills like PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, while others use generic insulation to help feet stay warm. Insulation weight, which can range from 100 to 400 grams, gives one clue to warmth. Some boots also state a minimum low temperature, like 0 degrees F, though this is based on that brand’s estimate, not standardized testing.

Many winter boots have fleece linings for added warmth and comfort. You can also boost warmth by wearing thicker socks or using foot warmers. Boots that are too warm can also be an issue excess sweat can act to chill feet when temps inside the boots drop, which can happen when you stop moving after a period of activity.

Waterproofing: Keeping feet dry is a prerequisite to keeping them warm. Boots for high-energy activities like winter hiking or snowshoeing might have waterproof/breathable technologies like a GORE-TEX membrane inside. Some boots might be waterproof but not breathable. Still, other winter boots are made with materials that offer basic water resistance.

You can also add or restore waterproofing on boots. For DIY help, read How to Waterproof Boots.

Taller boots help keep snow and water from sneaking in from above. You can also add gaiters or cover the boot tops with snow pants to keep the wet stuff at bay.

How To Waterproof Winter Boots

Like jackets, bibs, and gloves, your boots might eventually wear out their waterproofness. To keep the water-repellent properties of your boots strong, prep them with a waterproofing wax before the first snow of the season.

Before applying any waterproofing substances, you should make sure that your boots are clean and dry. Mountain Warehouse has a great guide on how to clean and waterproof leather, suede/nubuck, and fabric boots.

Once your boots are clean, use a hairdryer to warm up everything above the sole. If you choose a Nikwax product, they advise that you do not warm your boots before or after applying the wax. If youre applying Sno Seal, however, they recommend warming your boots up to 120 °F, maximum . Note: DO NOT PUT YOUR BOOTS IN THE OVEN! Use a hairdryer.

With a clean rag, coat and rub as much of the waterproofing wax into your boots as you can. Concentrate on seams and high-use areas , as these are the most likely to lose their waterproofing. Wipe off excess wax with a clean rag and buff off any remaining wax. Let it sit overnight for best results, but if youre in a hurry to head outside, youll still be covered!

Reviews For The Xtratuf Legacy 15

The Xtra Tuf Legacy 15 Boots earned these ratings: Amazon , New York Times/Wirecutter , Outdoor Gear Lab , and Gear Junkie . See our for links.

  • Gear Junkie said it right: Built by and for Alaskan anglers, the Xtratuf boot line is designed for hard work in the harshest conditions. In collaboration with Salmon Sisters, the classic Legacy boot becomes a stylish option for the serious outdoorswoman.

  • New York Times/Wirecutter, although updating their top rain boot to another Xtra Tuf offering, still had great things to say about the Legacy: The 15-inch Xtratuf Legacy Boot for men and women is an all-around great boot that wed still recommend. Its high quality, its flexible at the ankle, it offers super-sticky soles, and it has stood the test of time.

  • Womens Outdoor News pointed out a great observation in their review of the Xtra Tuf Legacy 15 Salmon Sisters boots while Xtra Tuf makes both mens and womens versions that inherently look the same, the womens versions have a narrower ankle and heel, which fit womens ankles better.

  • Out of the 17 adventure partners I asked who own Xtra Tuf Legacy 15 boots, every single one said that they wear their Xtra Tufs year-round. Our Colorado friends, upon seeing our Alaskan contingents wearing Xtra Tufs to the ski hill and out on the town, have begun to buy them for themselves. One couple brought them as their only winter boots to Japan. Theyre not just a boot theyre an institution.

Sock Pairings For Winter Boots

Your sock choice is just as important as the boot itself. Thick winter socks, like those made of wool, merino wool or other moisture-wicking materials are best to keep you warm and dry. Stay away from cotton blends or anything with synthetic materials. While many boots have a lining for extra warmth, it cant hurt to double up with a trusty pair of winter performance socks. Merino wool, in particular, has moisture-wicking and heat-retaining technology, meaning youll be toasty warm without the sweat.

For shopping made easy, we rounded up the best winter boots for men to invest in. They come courtesy of top outdoor and luxury leather brands, and are all highly reviewed by customers, gear experts and editors. And lucky for you, many of these popular styles are on sale.

How Should Winter Boots Fit

Men

This might be the trickiest question to answer. While you want your winter boots to fit well , a lot depends on the thickness of your winter socks.

In general, when you try on winter boots, you want to wear a thick sock , then try them on again with a thinner sock . That way you can find the in-between for when you wear your boots with different sock thicknesses.

If you have wide feet, look for models that are better for molding to wider feet or opt for a wide option.

You want to find a happy medium where your boots have a little wiggle room but arent too roomy. As with any other shoe you try on, walk around in them to make sure that the heels arent rubbing, your toes arent cramped, that you have ample ankle support , and nothing hurts.

Womens heels tend to be slimmer, and their ankles smaller than mens. Womens boots, therefore, are generally designed to be slimmer in the heel to fit better and reduce slippage. If you have wide feet, however, keep in mind that some boots come in wide options, or are better for molding to wider feet.

Re-waterproofing is just part of the maintenance you should expect to do several times over the life of your winter boots.

  • Hybrid Winter Boots
  • Stylish Winter Boots

When shopping for your perfect pair, its important to note there are several different types of winter boots to choose from. Snow boots, for example, are designed with techy materials and constructions to be super warm, grippy and waterproof when trudging through ice and snow. Meanwhile, duck boots are a specific classic style that have a waterproof toe and are typically lined with warm fleece or shearling. Winter work boots are made with extra-protective features to guard feet from falling debris and stylish winter boots are the ones you can dress up while remaining surefooted on snowy days. One pair of boots can fit under a few different categories, like a hybrid pair of winter boots you can wear in the backcountry and around town . How To Clean And Store Winter Boots

For best cleaning practices, check out your boots manufacturers website. How To Clean Stuff has a great article on how to clean and deodorize winter boots and inserts. Mountain Warehouse has a great guide on how to clean and waterproof leather, suede/nubuck, and fabric boots. Related: Care and Maintenance for Hiking Boots

When the snows melt and its time to start thinking about flip-flops, make sure that your boots are clean and completely dry. Putting your winter boots away wet enables mold and bacteria to grow during the warmer months. Ideally, wrapping them up and storing them in a clean, dry box for the summer is the best practice. If youre like me and dont have my storage on lock , wrapping them in a garbage bag also works well. Just be sure they have had a chance to completely dry beforehand.
