Men’s Brooks Beast 18 | Fit Expert Shoe Review

1) Asics Gel GT-2000 10

The GT-2000 has always been a safe, please-all stability shoe with a medial post. The safe character also applies to the upper fit.

In its stock D width, the engineered mesh forefoot offers a just-right interior volume. For runners with wide feet, Asics sells a 2E and 4E in the GT-2000 10.

While were here, a couple of notes on the changes that have taken place on the latest GT-2000.

While Asics no longer mentions the Duomax medial post this time, we sense a firmer foam wedge thats co-molded with the rest of the midsole. The plastic midfoot shank from the GT-2000 9 is also gone.

The GT-2000 10 continues to be a mild stability shoe and a great everyday trainer, except that its a softer and toned-down version of the GT-2000 9.

2) Brooks Ghost 14

The forefoot room was never an issue with the Brooks Ghost, and that doesnt change for the 14th edition either.

The upper is devoid of a full inner sleeve or forefoot overlays, thus making its regular D width comfortable for most feet shapes. If you find the Ghost 14 narrow, just know that this model also retails in an optional wide and extra wide.

Theres a good reason why the Brooks Ghost is such a successful running shoe. The single-density midsole is very comfortable and smooth a cushioning blend thats excellent for everyday runs.

3) Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21

4) New Balance Fresh Foam 1080V11

5) Saucony Kinvara 12

Why People With High Arches Need To Wear Shoes

Why? Because when youre walking around or working out without footwear on, youre not doing anything to support your high arches. People with high arches tend to supinate when they step. That means they roll their feet outward to take pressure off their arches.

Supination can lead to problems with your Achilles tendon, plantar fasciitis and ankle issues. Therefore, its a good idea to find shoes you can wear for all occasions in your exercise routine.

Best Running Shoes For Wide Feet

Men

This article has been updated with current models for October 2021. The Asics GT-2000 9, Brooks Ghost 13, Mizuno Wave Rider 24, Saucony Endorphin Shift, and Skechers GoRun Ride 8 have been replaced with their updated versions. The Brooks Addiction GTS 15 is a new addition. The Asics Novablast has been removed.

On one hand, snug-fitting running shoes have their place in a rotation. Lets say youre running track intervals or racing a 5K. In both cases, a secure upper fit is a prerequisite.

However, for high-mileage workouts or daily runs, an easygoing fit works far better. The feet increases in volume during long runs, so having an accommodating upper makes the ride experience enjoyable.

So how does one go about finding a running shoe with a spacious fit?

Some brands do a great job of offering optional widths. New Balance, in particular, offers at least a wide for most of their running shoes. Asics and Brooks are catching up fast.

Though adidas now sells widths in some of their lower-priced products, and Nike does the same for a few of their popular models, the two shoe giants are nowhere close to New Balance or Brooks.

The problem with only a single width is that its based on the one-size-fits-all approach. Thats one of the reasons why it is so frustrating to find a shoe that fits and feels right footwear purchase is a highly personal choice.

We say this to manage expectations when we refer to an accommodating fit elsewhere on this guide.

Wide Width Cycling Shoes

Over on my blog post about Peloton bike shoes, which I mentioned above, I talk about finding cycling shoes in wide widths. This is a real challenge for Peloton users like me. There are very few bike shoe brands that offer shoes in a true wide width and that take the Delta Look cleat.

For example, the only brand Ive been able to find for my double wide feet is Bontrager. Again, Bontrager cycling shoes take the Delta Look cleat that fits the original Peloton bike pedals.

You can find other wide options if you ride a bike that takes SPD bike cleats. Its one of the reasons many Peloton users swap out their pedals to be SPD compatible. That way, they can use cycling shoes they might wear with their outdoor bikes with their Peloton, too.

Note: if you remove the original Peloton pedals, you could void your warranty. So keep that in mind.

Brands For Wide Weightlifting Shoes

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20 | The Most Popular Max Stability Shoe?

For example, the group mentioned the Altra Footwear brand shoe, which you can buy on Zappos. . These are wide width sneakers Ive never heard about before.

In addition, there were certain styles from well-known brands, not known for wide sneakers, that they recommended. For instance, many people said Nike Metcon shoes were worth checking out. Same with Reebok Nano sneakers.

Finally, when looking for these wide width sneakers for weightlifting, you should also consider shoes called crosstraining. Basically, what youre looking for are flatter shoes with thinner soles.

Well, Ive ordered nearly all of the weighlifting shoes Ive listed here. Once they arrive, Ill be trying them on and reporting back on how they fit.

Extra Room In Toe Box Of Wide Width Sneakers

Besides having high arches and a wide foot, I have a wide toe box. That means that my foot is its widest in my toe area. Therefore, I always need shoes that have a wide toe box.

In addition, I have narrow heel and ankle. This makes it especially challenging to find wide width sneakers. Why? Because many manufacturers dont realize that just because youre giving extra room in the toe box for a wide forefoot doesnt mean the heel has to be extra wide.

So, when shopping for wide width sneakers, there are three things I always look for. One, extra room in the toe box. I try to cross my toes inside the shoes. If I can do that, I know the shoe is wide enough for me.

Two, no pressure on the bottom of my foot. Ive learned that if I feel the bottom of my forefoot being squeezed, it means the shoe isnt wide enough.

Three, lacing that goes up almost to my ankle. That is, there is a hole for the shoe laces that goes up almost to the top of the tongue.

Are Some Running Shoe Brands Wider Than Others

As a general rule, New Balance not only makes many running shoes in various widths but they also have a wider toe box than many other brands.

Brooks is another running shoe brand that has a wider toe box and also offers many of their models in a wide or extra wide.

Altra and Topo two footwear brands that make running shoes that promote barefoot running also have a very wide toe box. These go from wide to extra wide depending on the model.

There are also a few brands that tend to run narrow. Nike is notorious for making shoes that are very narrow. Asics is another brand that is tight in the midfoot and heel and may not be good for runners with wide feet.

Wide Width Running Shoes

We have a joke in our family that we only run when chased. Ha ha. However, that doesnt mean that we dont like wear running shoes. We do.

I find that running sneakers often come wider than shoes made for other kinds of sports. Therefore, youll definitely find them in our closet.

Amazingly, on Zappos you can find quadruple wide width running shoes from New Balance for women, too. I had no idea that Zappos stocked running sneakers in such a wide width.

Unfortunately, though, when you get to these wider widths, you have fewer color choices. However, when youve looking for good wide width sneakers, comfort should come first. If you can get in fashion, too, well, then, thats a bonus.

Wide Width Weightlifting Shoes

Men

Id never considered buying wide width weightlifting shoes until the topic came up in a Peloton-related Facebook group. These are people who are following a lot of Peloton strength classes via the Hardcore on the Floor calendar.

During that discussion I learned about brands of shoes that were new to me as well as styles of common shoes that seemed to run wider than expected.

A few years ago my daughter Annie, also of the wide foot, and I visited a local running store. We both needed wide width sneakers for working out. This was the first time either of us were fitted for Brooks sneakers.

What Wide Running Shoes Are Good For Bunions

Men’s Brooks Ghost 11 | Fit Expert Shoe Review

When you have bunions, you need a running shoe with plenty of room in the toe box to accommodate the bunions. But most runners have a standard size heel. The challenge is finding a shoe wide enough for the bunions but narrower in the heel.

If you just choose a wide running shoe, youll likely find your heel slips. This can sometimes be corrected with the lace lock we just mentioned however, a better option might be a shoe with a different shape.

Altra running shoes are best known for their wide toe box and medium width heel. These feel great and come in various degrees of cushioning. But they also have a zero drop. This means the toe and heel are the same height. In most running shoes, the heel is slightly higher than the toe, producing a downward angle from heel to toe.

The zero drop in an Altra takes some getting used to. It helps if you land on your midfoot or ball of your foot, not your heel, when you run.

If you cant get behind a zero drop shoe, try the Asics GT-2000. These running shoes have a standard width and drop, but include bunion windows that are designed to expand on the sides where bunions protrude.

How Wide Should My Running Shoes Be

Unlike shoe length , the width of your running shoes is much more subjective. Some people have wide feet and truly need a wide or extra wide running shoe. But some runners straddle the line between standard and wide sizes and can alternate between the two depending on running shoe model.

So how do you know if you need a wide shoe or not?

If you try on a shoe and it feels tight and restrictive on the sides of your feet, you should try a wide . Or if the sides of your feet hang over the foam in the midsole, you should also try a wide.

On the flip side, if you try on a wide running shoe and your heel slips in the collar, you may not need a wide.

Ultimately, if you can fit your foot in the shoe and it feels comfortable, thats the true test of whether a wide is needed or not. Brannock devices, meant to measure length and width, are a good starting point but arent always accurate.

Some runners have more sensitive feet than others and need a wider shoe. The shape of a shoe plays a role in whether you need a wide shoe. Running shoes that are cut wider in the toe box may allow enough give to prevent a runner from going into wide sizes.
