I got a pair of the Cariuma Catiba Pro shoes because I kept seeing pros and influencers wearing them.
I like that Cariuma uses ethically sourced, natural materials. They also are doing their best to save the rainforest. For every pair of sneakers they sell, they plant two trees in the Brazilian rainforest.
There has to be something to an environmentally friendly shoe that two out of three of the Olympic medalist skateboarders were wearing.
Brazilian Kelvin Hoefler earned a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics wearing a pair of the Cariuma Catiba Pros.
American Jager Eaton also got the bronze medal in the Olympics wearing the Cariuma Catiba Pro with a broken ankle!
So I wanted to see what it was like to skateboard in these shoes.

What Are Cariuma Ibi Sneakers
If you follow any style influencers on Instagram, chances are high youve seen Cariuma Ibi sneakersyou may have mistaken the casual low-top sneakers for similar-looking canvas sneakers Vans or Keds. The Brazil-based brand has gained a cult following for its comfortable, high-quality shoes that are also eco-friendly and, in the case of the Ibis, 100 percent vegan, meaning no animal products are used in their fabrication.
Cariuma sneakers also claim to be carbon-neutral, with the entire production and shipping process releasing zero net carbon emissions. We make up for the carbon emissions by purchasing carbon offsets, creating a footprint balance of zero, Cariumas website explains. And while were skeptical of bold environmental claims, the Ibi sneakers seem to have a more sustainable production line than most. We knit our sneakers from bamboo and recycled plastics from heel to toe, the product description states. The memory foam insole is made with cork, while the laces and labels are made with recycled plastic bottles and the outsole with sugarcane.

Are Cariuma Sneakers Vegan
Not all of Cariumas sneakers are vegan, but the Cariuma IBI is a 100% vegan shoe. How did Cariuma make this happen? Well, lets work from the bottom-up. The durable outsoles are derived from a sugarcane product called Green EVA. You are probably familiar with the concept of carbon-neutrality, but these outsoles are carbon-negative, believe it or not.
Cariumas proprietary memory foam insole is made from a mix of cork and organic mamona oil. To source cork, harvesters simply scrap bark from cork trees. The tree then forms new bark. And Mamona oil might be my favorite because it is a plant-based alternative to petroleum. The knit top is made from a bamboo product, and as we previously noted, Bamboo is self-regenerative, so when harvested properly, Bamboo is incredibly sustainable.

The Cons: What Do I Do Not Like About The Cariuma Catiba Pro Shoes
When I first put these on, it felt like they were a quarter size too big for me. I think it is more just getting used to the shoe feeling like it is pre-broken in. Cariuma uses more natural, ethically sourced materials. These shoes do not feel as tight or stiff when you first put these on. While the size I got is insanely comfortable, Id be curious to know if I should go one-half size smaller. Ill report back on this once I had a chance to try a slightly smaller size.
Most of the other reviews say they fit true to size, so if you run into an issue where you need to go one size smaller, just send yours back and order the next size down. Cariuma offers free return shipping.
The only other detail that is less than ideal is that these shoes tend to be on the more expensive side. That said, they do something no other skateboarding shoe brand does. They allow you to buy one shoe at a time.
When you are just learning to skate, you might go through the shoe of your front foot faster than your back foot. Cariuma makes it easy for you to buy either the left or the right shoe of any Catiba Pro style.
What You Need To Know Before Purchasing Cariuma Shoes
Ill be the first person to admit its not easy keeping white canvas shoes clean in outdoor settings. Ive found its easy to clean them with a soft brush and, if necessary, gentle detergent. Cariuma also recommends preventive maintenance to keep shoes clean by treating them with stain-repellent products and natural deodorizing sprays.
Cariumas shoeboxes are just as eco-friendly as the brands footwear. You can either repurpose the box like I did or you can recycle it. Some people save it to store the shoes between wears.
The Cariuma high-tops have eight eyelets, which means lacing and adjusting is part and parcel of owning the shoe. Its not a deal-breaker, especially if youve ever owned Doc Martens or Chuck Taylors, but its something to keep in mind if youre looking for grab-and-go footwear.
