Adidas Ultraboost 20 Vs Ultraboost 19
What changed on the adidas Ultraboost 20 vs Ultraboost 19? Since the adidas Ultraboost 20 was announced, its a question weve seen over and over again.
And thanks to the good people at adidas, we have the Ultraboost 20 in hand for a comparison with the Ultraboost 19 and our first impressions of the new model.

You know I’m a fan of mixed-format treadmill classes. I’m loyal to Orangetheory Fitness, but also like to mix it up with a Barry’s Bootcamp or SLT Tread class here and there. The problem with these classes is finding a shoe that can power you through the treadmill portion while also keeping your feet steady during the weightlifting blocks.
In the years I’ve been a fitness editor, I’ve gotten to try plenty of sneakers. And while I tend to stick to the tried-and-true running shoes I got fitted for at a running speciality shop for my half marathon to power me on the tread, I was pumped when Adidas sent me a pair of their Ultraboost 20 Shoes . I had heard good things about the Ultraboosts, and always thought they looked chic and stylish on my friends who rocked older versions of the sneaker. It wasn’t until I put them to the test that I really got the hype.
What Is New In The Adidas Ultraboost 20
Compared to the earlier version, ADIDAS have combined the Ultraboost with a successful property in the Solarboost series. Because, ADIDAS Ultraboost now has tailored fiber seams on its upper.
You can see these tailored fiber seams below. Notice the waving seams above the midsole: These fiber seams help the upper make the sides more stable while being elastic at the top.
During my run, I experienced the upper as nice and soft. The elastic upper provides an excellent fit that adjusts itself to your foot, be it wide or narrow. In addition, the upper is made from up-cycled plastic waste gathered from remote islands, beaches, and coasts. I think that is really cool, as it helps make the ADIDAS Ultraboost 20 environmentally friendly.
Why The Knitted Upper And Foamy Midsole In These Sneakers
The knitted upper of the adidas UltraBoost sneakers are not only for decoration but are also meant to stretch and then snap back into place. This feature ensures that the sneaker is not restrictive and that it does not stretch too much. The cagey lacing structure and the heel counter hugs your foot and locks it into place.
These fashion shoes for women have a foamy midsole or what is primarily known to many as “the boost.” The midsole is filled with tiny energy capsules joined to provide a springy, soft, and shock-absorbing ride. It has a pillow and a trampoline feel that gives you a âboostâ feel when combined.
The Rights And Wrongs Of A Knit Upper
The knit is actually quite comfortable and pretty supportive. The shoe is basically a one-piece knit upper, but the midfoot cage is separate and holds the laces rather than the laces being part of the upper.
I do think thats an improvement compared to having the laces within the knit fabric itself, but still not a huge fan of one-piece knit uppers.
The problem with having the laces being part of the upper when its a one-piece knit is that the knit starts folding in on itself when you lace them tightly.
That issue is resolved by having the eyelets being part of the cage, but it still doesnt give you the same lockdown as a traditional upper, and there are no extra eyelets to adjust the fit. There are actually just four eyelets rather than 5 of 6.
The tongue is quite high, and the shoes collar sits more on my ankle than around it. When not moving in them, its actually alright, but the upper starts to rub my ankle when I start moving.
The issue with a one-piece knit upper is that you cant really adjust it. With a separate tongue, I might have been able to adapt it to fit my foot a bit better, but in this case, thats not possible.

What Is Adidas Ultraboost All About
Ive tested several shoes from Adidas, but this is my first time testing the Ultraboost. It was bound to happen one day since I like cushioned shoes, and the Ultraboost is one of their most cushioned shoes.
For the 20th edition of the Ultraboost, they collaborated with the ISS and several colorways that were inspired by this. When I saw this, I just had to get a pair.
The Ultraboost is a neutral running shoe with a 12 mm forefoot stack and a 22 mm heel stack, which makes for a 10 mm drop. The Ultraboost is not a very light shoe, with 270 grams in the womens model.
I like the collaboration with the ISS with a kind of mother of pearl / metallic look for the stripes and the heel counter. I also like the colourway where they have the Boost midsole in that colour rather than the white, but unfortunately, that wasnt available.
Vs Saucony Triumph 17
The Triumph 17 has quite a large stack height with 25.5 mm in the forefoot and 33.5 in the heel, but its still 9 grams lighter than the Ultraboost, which has significantly less stack height.
The Triumphs PWRUN+ midsole looks a bit like Boost, but the Triumph is a bit plusher due to the higher stack height. The upper of the Triumph is also more plush than the knit of the Ultraboost.

Ultraboost 20 Vs Ultraboost 1: Whats The Same
The Boost midsole, TPU heel clip, and Continental rubber outsole look exactly the same. Nothing has changed with the heel clip or the outsole. However, adidas tells me the stack height has changed.
While I couldnt see or feel the difference , the Ultraboost 20 measures 7mm closer to the ground in both the forefoot and heel. It features the same 10mm drop as the Ultraboost 19 but has less Boost. Itll be interesting to see if I feel a difference while testing them. Dont automatically think of less Boost as a bad thing. The Ultraboost 19 featured too much cushion for some runners. Shaving a little bit of cushioning off shouldnt affect overall performance.
The overall weight is almost exactly the same. In a size 9, the Ultraboost 20 weighs in at 10.9 ounces and the Ultraboost 19 weighs 11.0 ounces. Some of the upper materials on the Ultraboost 20 are heavier so the thinner midsole allows for the weights to be almost equal.
Shoe Review: Adidas Ultraboost 20
The Adidas Ultraboost 20 is the successor to the very popular Ultraboost 19. This shoe was designed with performance in mind and their updates reflect this direction. The Ultraboost is a neutral trainer and a shoe that runners should consider adding to their line up.
The biggest updates that have been made to this shoe are in the upper. The footbed is a little narrower than in previous models, the mesh is a little tighter and the heel counter is stiffer. All of the changes have been made to keep the runners foot in place and allow them to go faster in the shoe. The Ultraboost 20s tighter knit means two things: less give and more durability. The stiffer heel counter serves a similar function, promoting durability in the shoe and stability for the foot. Finally, the neoprene collar around the heel adds to the overall comfort level.
The outsole remains Adidas signature Boost foam. Boost, which made its first appearance in Adidas shoes in 2013, is made of TPU beads that are expanded to form closed cells around tiny pockets of air. This is what makes the shoe particularly comfortable, durable and flexible. This isnt a shoe that you wear on your speed or interval days, but its a great neutral trainer for runs when your legs are feeling a little beat up.

Same Boost Sensation As Ever
If youve only recently tried an adidas Boost-filled shoe: how fabulous is it, right? Launched in 2013, while now considered a tad on the heavy side, it remains one of the bounciest midsole materials. Sure, it will suffer in comparison to shoes with carbon fibre plates in them but when it comes to a pure foam-based cushioning solution, Boost remains among the vanguard of materials.

Wrapping Up Adidas Ultraboost 20
Dont get me wrong, I like Boost, but the upper makes it hard to get the right lockdown you need for a running shoe.
Adidas has since launched the Adidas PB, which has the same midsole, but a lighter upper, which isnt a one-piece knit. That might give you a better lockdown to make it more suitable for a running shoe.
However, Its a great shoe if you are looking for a running shoe that you might also be wearing as casual wear. Its a comfortable and fashionable hybrid shoe.
How Adidas Ultraboost 20 Rides
The Boost midsole makes for a pretty soft ride, which is good for heel strikers. But the fact that your foot cant be locked down properly due to the knit upper and the lack of extra eyelets makes you slide around in the shoe a bit, which isnt ideal for running.
The Boost is plush, but there is not a huge energy return. Its not a very fast shoe. The weight also doesnt help. Its more a slow, long-run kind of shoe than a speedy, long-distance racing shoe.

You Get To Keep Everything You Know And Love From Adidas Ultraboost
In spite of the property taken from the Solarboost series, you should not worry that you then lose everything you know and love from the ADIDAS Ultraboost series. Compared to the earlier ADIDAS Ultraboost models, you get 20 % more Boost material in the midsole with the ADIDAS Ultraboost 20, just as the ADIDAS Ultraboost 19. So, with the ADIDAS Ultraboost 20 you get even more shock-absorption than before, that is, a softer and more responsive shoe, without any significant weight increase. During my runs, I felt that the ADIDAS Ultraboost 20 returned a lot of energy.
With the ADIDAS Ultraboost 20, you as always get the well-known heelcap and the open area around your Achilles tendon. This provides your Achilles tendon with the freedom of movability, which I think is very important especially for long distance running. The soft heel with extra padding helps to give the shoe an even more comfortable fit and stability when running.
ADIDAS Ultraboost 20 is a running shoe that provides you with MAXIMUM comfort on all your runs. It is insanely soft and nice! This shoe is without a doubt best suited for longer and more relaxed runs or for recovery runs. I myself am going to use these excellent running shoes on my long and relaxed runs.
Ultraboost 20 Vs Ultraboost 1: Whats The Difference
- Heel materials and lockdown
- Forefoot sidewall reinforcement
The main differences in our adidas Ultraboost 20 vs Ultraboost 19 comparison are the materials. The heel is now more sculpted and made completely of polyester instead of last years polyester interior/Primeknit exterior. The achilles pillows were removed in favor of more padding overall. Your heel gets sucked into the Ultraboost 20 and overall lockdown feels better.
Another material change that will produce mixed reactions is the new lace closure. Last years fused TPU mesh is replaced with a mostly synthetic version with thicker but flexible TPU edges. The lace closure is larger overall and is more attached to the TPU heel clip. The new version will add lockdown and support but some will prefer the smaller and lighter lace closure from the Ultraboost 19. Ill refrain from passing judgement until I see how it performs.
I loved how the Primeknit upper of the Ultraboost 19 felt. The airflow was fantastic. This year, adidas has used Primeknit+, which is a finer knit. Airflow should still be very good as the top of the toe area features a larger knit pattern that mirrors last years pattern.

How Have The Adidas Ultraboost Sneakers For Women Evolved
Since the first release of the adidas UltraBoost shoes for women, there have been several design changes. These designs offer you a variety to choose from or to buy at least more than one. First, there is the original UltraBoost, which was launched in 2015. Then came the Adidas UltraBoost 19, which has more boost in the midsole and has a snugger fit than the original UltraBoost.
The UltraBoost ST was later designed as an upgrade from the UltraBoost. This design featured a firm heel counter and dual-density cushioning under the arch. Then came the UltraBoost Laceless. These sneakers consist of all the breathtaking features of the UltraBoost, only they do not have laces. The other UltraBoost DNA cloud white shoes were released originally in white, resembling the clouds and giving a cloud-like ride in them. Other styles include the UltraBoost All Terrain, UltraBoost x Missoni, UltraBoost Uncaged, UltraBoost S& l, and UltraBoost Parley. There is also the UltraBoost x Game of Thrones.
adidas UltraBoost sneakers are high-performance shoes, designed to adapt to any foot and any foot stride. While running, your heel and forefoot rotate against each other, causing stretching and friction in the midfoot. The adidas UltraBoost is designed with a free-floating arch that adapts and adjusts with all the foot movements, leading to a personalized fit for any foot. This is made possible by the motion-tracking technology used to identify where your feet need support during motion.

How I Tested
I wore this shoe on five occasions throughout the course of a month. I ran on flat, paved streets during the heat of the summer and averaged about three or four miles per run.
As with all of the shoes tested for the SELF Certified Sneaker Awards, I considered factors like fit, how the shoe mapped to my foot, the ride the shoe provided, the overall way my body felt, and the ease with which I was able to fall into a comfortable running cadence. You can read more about our criteriawhich are based on recommendations from our expertshere.
Even though these are running shoesand our criteria relate to thatI also kept in mind if I could see myself wearing these shoes for anything else. Could I also do some basic squats or even lift some dumbbells in these and still feel comfortable? I consider it to be paramount that your running shoes can do more than just support you during a jog.
These shoes fit as expectedIve consistently worn a size 7.5 for years, and thats the size I wore here. The shoe has a soft knit upper that wrapped around my foot plus, its well padded on the inside of the heel, so it fit around my ankle with a snug feel.
These shoes left plenty of room for my toes to spread out and wiggle freely. I think in general the Ultraboost tends to have a moderate-to-roomy toe bed, and this shoe was no exception.
