Tricare Users Get Discounts On Chiropractic Care Gym Memberships In New Pilot

The latest Tricare pilot program meant to provide better care and reduce costs has come to Atlanta, Georgia as Tricare partners with Kaiser Permanente.

Nearly 1,760 Tricare beneficiaries signed up during open enrollment last year for the health care pilot that will be available for three years. That is about 740 people short of meeting the programâs initial goal.

Tricare officials are testing out partnerships like this so they can move to a value-based system instead of a volume-based program that reimburses health care providers by the amount, not quality, of care they provide.

This model can fragment the delivery of health care and inadvertently reward providers for providing low value tests, services, or procedures that are not correlated with positive health outcomes, a Tricare document said.

So testing and adding value-based programs pay providers based on improved health outcomes, enhanced experience of care for the patient, and reduced health care costs over time.

The pilot program is available to beneficiaries who are eligible for Tricare Prime and are living in one of the 17 counties surrounding Atlanta. Military Health System officials chose the Atlanta metro area because having too many military medical clinics and hospitals in the area would confound the program outcomes. The region also has an ideal population size.

Does Original Medicare Cover Silversneakers

Original Medicare does not provide the SilverSneakers program as a benefit.

However, if you are eligible for Medicare Parts A and B, you have the choice each year to forgo Original Medicare and choose a Medicare Advantage plan instead. Many Medicare Advantage plans offer SilverSneakers at no extra cost to their members.

Some Medicare Supplement plans offer SilverSneakers as well. Although supplement plans generally do not offer additional benefits on top of what Medicare Part A and Part B cover, SilverSneakers is a benefit that some Medigap plans are able to add to your existing Medicare coverage.

How Will Silver Sneakers Work At Youfit And Planet Fitness Gyms

Damon Bishop, a regional director with Youfit in Sarasota County, said the gym has received an uptick of inquiries in the past 60 days from seniors who mentioned the YMCAs plans to end its affiliation with Silver Sneakers.

Bishop said that, even as the company goes through a rebranding on Oct. 25, it will continue to honor Silver Sneakers.

As long as you have Silver Sneakers and you are eligible under the Silver Sneakers program, youre eligible to attend classes, Bishop said.

For insurance reasons, participants are technically enrolled as Youfit members but thats at no additional cost to the senior.

A Youfit national spokeswoman confirmed that practice would continue elsewhere.

Since Planet Fitness locations are owned locally and operated by franchisees, participation in Silver Sneakers is decided locally, Planet Fitness spokeswoman Becky Zirlen said via email.

The south Sarasota location nearest the YMCA off of Center Road participates in the Silver Sneakers program for both Planet Fitness membership types the $10 a month Classic Card a $22.99 a month Black Card membership.

Silver Sneakers members who belong to the South Sarasota location and have the Classic Card receive 100% of their membership and annual fee covered.

For those with a Black Card membership, Silver Sneakers covers $10 a month of the $22.99 a month membership fee and the member is responsible for the balance and the Annual Fee.

But Powell said he was upset by the pending change.
