“Having JD operate the Finish Line stores could strengthen the overall operating performance, thus providing incremental full-priced selling opportunities for the brands especially if JD were to accelerate U.S. store openings of its own banner and the remodeling of FINL stores,” wrote Baird analyst Jonathan Komp in a recent research note.

“Note that JD also indicated plans to open a number of JD branded stores in the U.S. and to accelerate reimaging of the Finish Line store fleet, both of which may be competitive threats for FL,” added Komp.

Why Finish Line Is Closing 150 Stores Even Though Athleisure Is Booming
Were in a moment when women are wearing yoga pants to the office, men are shaking up their casual uniforms with jogger pants, and style snobs are clomping around Fashion Week not in high heels, but in sneakers. Meanwhile, performance apparel brands such as Nike and Under Armour have been delivering explosive sales growth.
So if athletic apparel is so hot, why has Finish Line announced this week that it is closing 150 of its 617 stores?
For starters, the move is a reflection of how much regional malls are struggling and the pace at which more shoppers shift to buying online. In a Thursday conference call with investors, chief financial officer Edward Wilhelm said the 150 stores that Finish Line is closing only generate about $1 million each in annual sales. That is less than half the company average.
And so Finish Line believes it can improve its profitability if it trims the fat in its store fleet and instead focuses on the most lucrative locations.
Many of its retail industry counterparts are doing the same calculus: Macys is set to close 36 stores this year, while Gap is the process of closing about one-quarter of its North American fleet. Pier 1 Imports plans to shutter 100 stores over three years.
Finish Line announced Thursday that Sato, the company president, would take over the chief executive role from Glenn Lyon, a shake-up that suggests the board of directors thinks the chain needs some fresh thinking about its future.

On Monday, news broke that U.K.-based JD Sports Fashion had agreed to buy U.S. sportswear retailer Finish Line Inc. in a deal worth $558 million. In response to the acquisition, some analysts on the Street see athletic apparel and sneaker companies Nike Inc. , Adidas AG, and Under Armour Inc. benefiting, while warning that it may pose as a significant competitive threat to Foot Locker Inc. .
JD Sports, which overtook Sports Direct as Britain’s leading sportswear retailer by , is looking to push into the high-value U.S. market as demand for branded sports shoes and clothes has given the chain an advantage against its competitors. A move into the world’s largest sportswear market is the company’s boldest yet, and should increase its importance to international brands such as Nike and revived German company Adidas.
Finish Line sells premium athletic footwear, apparel and accessories across 950 branded retail stores in U.S. malls and shops inside Macy’s Inc. department stores, as well as online. As a highly promotional and competitive retail space has cut prices for athletic gear down in the recent period, brands like Nike could see an improvement with JD in the U.S. market.

NEVER buying anything from finish line again. Ordered a pair of shoes for my son for Christmas on 12/19/2021. I got an email a couple days later saying they canceled my order and that I would get my refund within 3-5 business days.. it is now MARCH 2nd, 2022 and STILL NOTHING! Everytime I call customer service they keep telling me itll be refunded in 3-5 business days its been almost 3 months and still nothing!! They dont even deserve 1 star.
Customer service was horrible over phone and they dont respond to emails. Will never order from here again. Had to contact my bank to receive my refunds.

Never will I ever spend money with finish line again. I have so many points for status n can never use them on the days to reserve. Their always making excuses like, oh the reservations went out a day early then it supposed to, it was a glitch in our system. WTH and I been waiting on this item and you guys are acting like its my fault or something. Smh the most noble thing to do was take the reservations from the day before when the glitch happened, discard all of those and then make ppl do it on the day it was supposed to. Ordering from their website is a NIGHTMARE. I ordered a jacket and it was “processing” for a week. After 1 call to support, they changed the ticket to get a different fulfillment person. After 2 days they then cancelled my order because they “couldn’t find the product”. The website and app both say it’s in stock. The app even let me order it again. They should work on not letting people buy stuff that they don’t have. I gave 2 stars because the customer service in the stores are great and the product I ordered in the store was received in a couple days.EDIT: After they cancelled my order, I purchased the jacket through their app and it shipped within 3 days without any headaches . They either only care about their rewards members, or they’re extremely unorganized and getting anything from them is pure luck.

I would give a zero if I could. I ordered my daughter a pair of shoes in December. Finish line cancelled the order due to being out of stock. Here we are in March and have still not been refunded and still do not have a pair of shoes. They owe me over $100 I will never order from this company again. Horrible customer service. Go get shoes elsewhere.

I ordered $40 pair if Adidas leggings instead was shipped a $5 hat. Was told to send hat back which i did and they never sent my leggings. When I tried customer service 7 times i may add they said they did not get the $5 hat so they wont send me my $40 leggings… This was in December. I have no refund of my money. I Would Give A 0 Star If I Could
When I went into the store to buy my son some shoes, we chose 2 but both in the same size. We wanted a different size in one of them so I asked the worker that was assisting us and she bent down to pick up all of the shows. I told her to leave them their because we have not chosen which one we wanted yet and she said that the policy was that a worker cant leave shoes with a costumer. Before that, every time I would turn around to my son to put the shows on for him, she would be looking over my shoulder as if I am putting the shoes into a bag trying to steal them. But their were other people b us also trying on shoes and they had shoes in front of them and when they asked for another pair, she just left the shoes that they had and got them the others. When i went to talk to the manager about it, he just said “ok theirs nothing i can do about that” then walked away from me.
