To join the SilverSneaker program, you must be eligible for Medicare and have a Medicare advantage or supplemental insurance plan available to you that includes a Silver Sneakers membership.
Once you are enrolled in a participating health plan, you will receive a SilverSneakers ID card in the mail which you can use to sign up online or at any participating gym, fitness studio or YMCA.
Whats Included In An Aetna Silversneakers Membership
Each location offering a SilverSneakers class may have different amenities or program activities, but some of the things you may expect to find include:
- Classes that focus on senior health and flexibility like yoga or tai chi
- Group exercises
- Sports leagues exclusively for senior adults
- Health and nutrition education
- Social activities and events
- Access to things like weights and cardio equipment, hot tubs, saunas, swimming pools, basketball and racquetball courts and other available amenities

How Do You Get A Membership
SilverSneakers list of participating health plans changes over time. For example, the parent company, Tivity Health, Inc., dropped some plans around 2016 while it redefined its mission and restructured. In 2020, eight new health plans will offer SilverSneakers.
If you have a preferred gym or fitness studio, ask if they partner with SilverSneakers. You can also check with your plan provider or the SilverSneakers website.
Look for access within your Medicare Advantage plan. The best time to do so is when you enroll in a new plan or review an existing one during the annual open enrollment period between October 15 and December 7. The Medicare open enrollment period officially begins Monday, October 15th. But before that comes many insurance providers have been tweaking the plans that they offer through the open marketplace.
When one Boardman woman received the notice about a change in her supplemental plan, she was shocked.
Meg Glines is an avid gym goer and says that her physical well-being is very important to her. Which is why she puts such a high value on the Silver Sneakers program.
Silver Sneakers is considered a perk offered by some insurance providers. The program provides those who are 65 and older with free gym memberships or access to fitness classes.
However, United Healthcare notified Glines that they will no longer offer Silver Sneakers on the AARP Supplemental Plan.
My Silver Sneakers program is my wellness program for myself and my husband. We both attend the gym, and we utilize the Silver Sneakers classes, said Glines.
Glines uses her Silver Sneakers membership to take several classes at Creekside Fitness in Boardman, including aerobics, yoga, and senior drumming.
Glines said its important to her. It helps us maintain our health, plus adds socialization to our lives. Especially in the morning. Thats when I come to the classes, she said.
Plus, Glines said she sees it as a positive for their overall wellness.
In addition, Andrea Leonard, a personal trainer at Creekside, says there are benefits that are important to older gym goers.
