Effective Jan 1, 2017: Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has added Silver Sneakers to their Medicare Supplement Plans in Ohio, Colorado, Illinois and Maine.
Silver Sneakers is a program that offers free or low cost gym memberships at more than 13,000 facilities for eligible enrollees in participating plans. You must be Medicare eligible to enroll in a plan.

SilverSneakers eligibility is based around the Medicare Advantage plan you are currently enrolled. Below are the Silver Sneaker eligibility requirements:
- 65 or older
- Currently eligible for Medicare Parts A and B

SilverSneakers has a lot of classes available for every physical activity level. Whats most important is finding a Medicare plan that includes fitness benefits and meets your other health needs and personal goals. Heres what you need to know about which insurance plans include SilverSneakers or other fitness benefits.
You can only get SilverSneakers if youre enrolled in a participating Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan. SilverSneakers is a private fitness program only available to people with Medicare. Its not part of your Original Medicare coverage.
Currently, the following major insurance companies offer plans with the SilverSneakers fitness benefit:
- AARP
- UnitedHealthcare
- WellCare
Smaller companies in your area may be offering plans with SilverSneakers, so dont be discouraged if your preferred plan provider isnt on the list. Use the Medicare Plan Finder tool to see whats available. You can also call a Medicare broker for information on local plans.
How Do You Get A Membership
SilverSneakers list of participating health plans changes over time. For example, the parent company, Tivity Health, Inc., dropped some plans around 2016 while it redefined its mission and restructured. In 2020, eight new health plans will offer SilverSneakers.
If you have a preferred gym or fitness studio, ask if they partner with SilverSneakers. You can also check with your plan provider or the SilverSneakers website.
Look for access within your Medicare Advantage plan. The best time to do so is when you enroll in a new plan or review an existing one during the annual open enrollment period between October 15 and December 7. You can also make SilverSneakers one of the criteria for selecting your Medicare Supplement plan.

If youre a beneficiary under 65, you may qualify for an Advantage plan with SilverSneakers. There is NO age requirement!
The program requires the following:
- Enrollment in a plan that includes a membership
- If the gym membership costs an extra fee, you must pay the premium.
But, a plan must be available in your area. Some areas have a few options. While the program is helpful, its not suitable for everyone.
