SilverSneakers is a program that helps keep seniors active and fit. You may have access to gym benefits now, and not know it.
The SilverSneakers program consists of gym memberships, group fitness classes, and access to well-trained instructors and reputable fitness centers. Many plans offer fitness benefits to their members.
Do you want access to a local gym or on-demand workouts? Are you Medicare-eligible? Below we will discuss the many possibilities, including cost, plans, and companies.
United Healthcare And Silver Sneakers
After learning about Silver Sneakers, you are probably impressed with the program. You can imagine yourself in a gym getting fit or adhering to a nutritional plan, and feeling 30 again. But theres more to the story
As of October 2019, United Healthcare announced that it will no longer offer SilverSneakers as a benefit. Anyone who was not enrolled in United Healthcares plans by January 2021 will not be able to access SilverSneakers as a benefit.
This drop in support is not a falling-out between the companies. NPR even did a story on the breakup.
But you still might be shocked, considering the benefits and robustness of Silver Sneakers. United Healthcare found that despite offering SilverSneakers, 90% of those who have the benefit never set foot in a SilverSneakers gym. Many Medicare recipients may have not been aware of the benefit, thus not using it. Those who reap the benefits of this program will, however, be supported.
United Healthcare is not alone in ending their relationship with Silver Sneakers.
The Tennessee YMCA and BlueCross BlueShield have ended their relationship with Silver Sneakers in all their locations.
Tivity Health announced that if you are already enrolled in United Healthcares plans and receive SilverSneakers as a benefit, then it will remain available to you through December 31, 2022.

Does Medicare Cover Gym Memberships
Medicare doesnt cover the costs of fitness programs and gym memberships, although some Advantage plans include a gym membership.
Advantage plans can offer extra benefits that arent available through Medicare. People that sign up for an Advantage plan must pay the Part B premium and any plan costs.
Supplement plans are Medigap policies, and they dont include coverage for gym memberships.
Private companies offer different plan options. Beneficiaries should compare plan rates in their area.

Who Is Eligible For Silversneakers
If youre a beneficiary under 65, you may qualify for an Advantage plan with SilverSneakers. There is NO age requirement!
The program requires the following:
- Enrollment in a plan that includes a membership
- If the gym membership costs an extra fee, you must pay the premium.
But, a plan must be available in your area. Some areas have a few options. While the program is helpful, its not suitable for everyone.
For example, those in Charleston, South Carolina might have more options than those in more rural areas.

Does Tricare For Life Cover Silversneakers
TRICARE For Life doesnt provide SilverSneakers coverage. But, enrolling in an Advantage plan could provide you with extra benefits.
If there is an Advantage plan with fitness benefits in your area, enrolling will give you access. You must review your benefits before joining.
Choosing an Advantage plan could limit you to a network of doctors smaller than the TRICARE network.

I Have Silversneakers And Have Access To Three Gyms But I Have No Transportation What Can I Do
Unfortunately, it does not look like SilverSneakers® offers transportation at this time. However, you do have options.
You can start by downloading the SilverSneakers® GO app, which includes exercises and activities that you can do from home.
You can also check with your Medicare Advantage plan to see if they offer transportation benefits, or find out if your city or county offers transportation that can get you to a gym.

How Do I Get A Silver Sneakers Card
As a Medicare Advantage plan member you will receive a membership card for your health benefits and a separate Silver Sneakers card.
**Tip If you lose your Silver Sneakers card, you can show your current Medicare Advantage card at the gym, so dont worry!
The system will recognize that you are a member with a participating Medicare Advantage plan and automatically issue you a 16-digit Silver Sneakers card number. Below is what the Silver Sneakers card form looks like.
Do you need to get a new Medicare Silver Sneakers card if you change your Medicare plan?
If you change your Medicare Advantage plan, your account will be transferred to the new health plan within Silver Sneakers. There is nothing you need to do other than keep exercising and enjoying your Silver Sneakers fitness benefits.

SilverSneakers membership advantages are supplied to members at no cost to them. Using a gym or fitness services that are not covered in SilverSneakers will require you to pay a fee for such services. Original Medicare does not cover gym memberships or exercise programs such as SilverSneakers, which are popular among seniors.
How To Qualify For Silversneakers
Unfortunately, Original Medicare plans dont cover a SilverSneakers membership. SilverSneakers is considered a gym membership or fitness program, and the Medicare website explicitly says it wont cover those.
However, there is the chance that a Medicare Advantage plan will cover it. A supplemental plan could also cover the SneakerSilvers program. The SilverSneakers website says the program is covered by one in four Medicare programs, though the organization doesnt specify if this is 25 percent of Medicare Advantage plans or 25 percent of all Medicare plans.
You can check if your Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan covers SilverSneakers on the programs website. You can visit that same link if youre in the market for a Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan and want to find one that include SilverSneakers in its coverage.
