Experts Share How To Help Prevent Falls And Stay Strong On Your Feetfor Life

When were young, we take staying upright for granted. We dont really worry about fallingit might not even cross our minds.

But over the years, things change. The bodys systems that detect gravity, identify exact body positioning at any moment, and promote balance and stability become less effective, says Caroline DeGroot, M.P.T., a physical therapist at Athletico Physical Therapys vestibular program, which focuses on helping adults improve their balance and stability.

On their own, these declines increase your risk of falling, but they often occur alongside losses in muscle strength and mobility, says Barbara Bergin, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in Austin. She adds that type 2 diabetes, which affects about 25 percent of older adults, is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy, or nerve damage that can result in numbness in the hands, feet, and other parts of the body.

Put all of that together, and its easy to see why falls are the number-one cause of injuries and death from injuries among older Americans. In fact, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an older adult falls every single second of each day in the United States.

Its never too early to start thinking about improving your balance and preventing falls. Below, DeGroot shares six of her favorite balance exercises. Perform these bodyweight moves as often as possible: when youre standing at the kitchen counter or waiting in line while running errands.

Are Online Courses Any Good

After all, taking an online course from a big brand business school doesnt require weeks or months of studying for a standardized test. You can do it without having to quit your job or make long sacrifices of time from your family. How To Become Fallproof

Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people aged 65+. Falls can result in hip fractures, broken bones, and head injuries. And even falls without a major injury can cause an older adult to become fearful or depressed, making it difficult for them to stay active.

There is a pattern to falls among the elderly: The fear of falling, then the injury, followed by hospitalization, decreased independence and mobility, and often relocation to a nursing or residential institution.

Falls can be a major life-changing event that robs the elderly of their independence.

Fortunately, many falls can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices and safety modifications in the home. This presentation teaches seniors how to cope with balance, how to exercise to prevent falls and what to do if they fall.

Rotational Squat + Low Jack

Chair Exercise for Seniors: 4 Exercises Youâve Gotta Try

Stand with your feet a little wider than hip-distance apart and keep your knees slightly bent. Then, rotate toward the right side of the room and step your right foot back. You can choose to bend the knees and sink down into a squat here, or not. Then rotate back to facing the front of your room and step your right foot up to face forward. Next, tap your right toe to the ground and push your right arm forward. Then, tap your left toe to the ground and push your left arm forward. Then, rotate to the left and step your left back and repeat the sequence.

Increase the intensity: After your step your right or left foot back, sink into a deeper squat. You can also move through the sequence at a quicker pace to challenge yourself.

Alternate this rotational squat on both sides of the body for 30 seconds.

Like these moves? Repeat these five exercises 2 or 3 times for a longer, more intense workout. If you prefer to exercise in a chair, try this 10-minute seated workout to strengthen your core. For a quicker workout, you can perform these six core exercises in 3 minutes.
